Description
The world's most impressive 5.1 multimedia set
Concept E 400
When we set out to build the Concept E 400, we set ourselves an ambitious goal. We decided to create the world's most impressive loudspeaker set for high-performance PC multimedia sound. The resulting system fulfills its promise and rounds out the upper-end of Teufel Concept E portfolio.

A 500 watt subwoofer
There's no way to look past the imposing CE 400 SW situated right at the center of this sound system. Its 500 watt amplifier supplies more than enough power to fill spaces up to 30 sqm with loud, clear sound.

300 mm bass driver
It's surprising, but the compact Concept E 400 puts a 300 mm bass driver at your disposal. Generally speaking, bass drivers of this size are reserved for home cinema systems costing 1,000 euros or more. Only Teufel delivers this level of material quality... for a third of the usual price!

The bass
From film effects, to gaming surprises and musical impulses... expect a level of bass capable of covering the entire spectrum. It drops below 32 Hz to ensure that you won't just hear the base, but that you'll also feel it!

The satellites
Five high-performance satellites constructed using two-way technology deliver a highly nuanced performance. An arched front piece ensures optimal directional characteristics, while a removable "floating" grille minimises corner reflections.

Consistently good
All five Concept E 400 satellite speakers are shielded and identically configured to ensure there are no distortions amongst channels. They are perfectly suited for placement on tables or shelves, wall-mounting or placement on speaker stands.

PC sound and beyond
Teufel's Concept E 400 is specifically designed to be connected with a PC. But it also delivers quality sound from other devices including DVD players, MP3 players, iPod docks, Sat receivers, gaming consoles and additional sources. Stereo sources sound great distributed over this 5.1 system thanks to built-in upmix technology!

Simply better
Concept E 400 guarantees peak-quality multimedia sound right at your PC.

Connect to a PC, Mac or Notebook
This loudspeaker ensemble is perfectly suited for direct use with computers. It features three 3.5 mm mini cinch connectors for connection with any 5.1-enabled sound card. Three Y-adapters (3.5 minijacks on 2 x cinch) _can be used to connect inputs for the front R/L, rear R/L, center and subwoofer to the back of the Concept E woofer. The Teufel system then further transmits the surround signal decoded by the sound card.

concept_e_ce400sw_back_detail_bigIf your sound card only has one 3.5 mm stereo minijack connecter, then a 3.5 minijack cinch adapter can be used to connect it to the front subwoofer inputs 'In R/L.' Connected this way, the Concept E amplifier uses an integrated 'upmix' function to distribute sound to all loudspeakers. The generated sound is significantly better than simple stereo, although it admittedly doesn't reach Dolby Digital or DTS levels. The system's functionality can always be upgraded to Dolby Digital/DTS with an additional, external or internal 5.1 sound card.

Use with Blu-ray or DVD player/recorder
Concept E can be used for connection with more than a PC. It's also a great solution for use with a Blu-ray or DVD player/recorder. It's a unique chance to put together a complete home cinema sound system using just two devices!

51 outIn order to connect Concept E directly to a Blu-ray or DVD player/recorder the device needs an integrated Dolby Digital/DTS Decoder. To determine if this is the case, check the back of the player/recorder. It should have a 5.1 cinch output (six cinch connectors for front R/L, rear R/L, center and subwoofer). Connect the three stereo cinch cables directly to the subwoofer - from the 5.1 cinch outputs of the DVD player to the 5.1 cinch inputs of the subwoofer. The five satellites are connected to the subwoofer using two-veined loudspeaker cable. Simply clamp the cables _down - no plugs or connectors are needed.

However, you can also use Concept E with Blu-ray or DVD player/recorders which don't have six analogue cinch-outputs. Connect the device's stereo output to the Concept E subwoofer's R/L inputs. An integrated 'Upmix' function then delivers an audio signal to the loudspeakers. Concept E's integrated upmix function may not sound as perfect as Dolby Digital or DTS, but it's a significant improvement over stereo sound.___ You can always expand the system to full Dolby Digital/DTS sound later using a Decoderstation.

Connection with an MP3-Player, sat-receiver, TV, gaming console, CD player, DJ mixer, etc…
Concept E is a system with universal functionality. It works with any of the devices listed above. Stereo sources can be 'upmixed' to virtual surround sound using all six of the system's speakers. Here's how:

Connect the stereo output of the MP3 player, sat receiver, TV or CD player to the front left/front right inputs on the back of the subwoofer. A 3.5 mm mini cinch cable using a stereo-cinch Y adapter can be used for this. Gaming consoles like the Xbox360, Wii or PS3 require a special adapter. All five satellite speakers are connected to the subwoofer using double-veined loudspeaker cable. The subwoofer then delivers signals to the individual speakers.

decoderstation 5 onConnect with any digital source
Concept E is shipped with six analogue inputs, giving it optimal sound quality in its price class. To avoid making compromises to audio quality, Teufel chose to not integrate a decoder, which would have been cost-prohibitive.
However, a Decoderstation 5 can be brought into play for connection to digital audio sources. With four optical coax connections for DVD players/recorders, the PS3, notebooks or sound cards, original 5.1 sound can be delivered via a Dolby Digital/DTS decoder.

More information about Decoderstation 5 >

Controlstation 2 ConnectionsConnection with analogue sources
A Concept E system is shipped ready for direct connection with a signal source. ___If you want to connect multiple stereo devices at the same time, ControlStation 2 represents the perfect solution. Two additional devices can be connected to Concept E in parallel. An infrared remote control makes it easy to switch between sources, and a headphone and microphone can also be connected.

More information about ControlStation 2 >

Connecting to Decoderstation 5
Concept E is a loudspeaker system which is connected directly to a decoder using six cinch cables. You can plug all of your source devices into the Decoderstation 5: four digital inputs with optical or coaxial connections are designed for DVD players/recorders, the PS3, notebooks or sound cards. A 5.1 analogue input enables connections with 5.1 sound cards.
Three additional analogue inputs make it possible to connect: stereo sound cards, a sat/DVB-T receiver, a TV, a video recorder, a cassette recorder, _Discman, Walkman, MP3 player, MiniDisk player, iPod, DJ mixer or a record player (with a line output) - basically any device you want to. If it's got two stereo outputs, it connects with Decoderstation 5.

ce400 swRecommended space
Concept E is perfectly designed for use directly at a PC workstation - so a relatively short distance. But you can also use the system to fill an entire room with home cinema sound. It's important to stay within the listening surface area recommended by us, though.

Operational characteristics
Once you've connected your set, you can make use of the system's most significant functions right on the front part of the subwoofer: adjust the volume and bass mix, or use the standby function.

Connect with a PC system
When setting up a PC sound system, it's a good idea to focus on the area being used - i.e. the area around the screen. The speakers can be slightly angled towards the listening position. The front loudspeakers should be set up to the left and right of the computer monitor at equidistance spaces, or mounted on the wall. Placing them at ear-level is optimal, but anywhere between 0.80 and 1.60 metres is also good. It the distance needs to be outside of the recommendation, then you can also angle the front loudspeakers out into the room a bit. An integrated wall mount makes it possible to hang all the loudspeakers - except for the subwoofer - on a wall by using a conventional screw.

aufstellung 1The subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room - except in the corner, as this can lead to uncontrollable frequency buildups. The location of the subwoofer doesn't have an effect on the other loudspeakers, but ideally it should be placed on a straight line between the front loudspeakers. The rear loudspeakers should be located directly across from the front ones at the same height. Imperfections in the placement and height of the speakers can be compensated for using the control software of your sound card.

Setup as a home cinema system
When using Concept E as a home cinema system, it's a good idea to concentrate on the part of the room where the actual listening will take place - the area where the TV and seating are located. Locating the TV as centrally as possible in relation to the seating is also advisable.

Because the center speaker renders speech in home cinema, it should be located directly under the television and can be angled towards or away from the listener. The front loudspeakers should be set up next to the TV in concordance with old stereo tradition (distance from the listener = distance between left and right speaker). Teufel's optionally-available stand feet are perfect for this, as they guarantee the speakers will be located at the ideal height. Wall mounts enable swiveling too or from the listener.

aufstellung 2When it comes to wall-mounting the speakers or placing them in shelves, the rule of thumb is somewhere between 40 centimetres and 1,60 metres. If the speakers must be placed outside of this range, they can be angled towards the listening point. What's vital is that the center and main loudspeakers are in a line, which may be slightly bent around the television.

The subwoofer can be placed freely throughout the room without affecting the loudspeakers. Ideally, it can be placed between the two front loudspeakers. It should not, however, be placed in a corner, as this can lead to an uncontrollable frequency buildup.

The rear speakers should be set up as a mirror image of the front speakers - ideally at the same height. If it's necessary to place the rear speakers higher or lower than the front speakers, then they can be angled towards the listening position, if need be. We recommend a distance of 1 metre between the rear speakers and the listening position. If you have to sit closer to the rear speakers, then it can be a good idea to angle them out into the room instead of pointing them directly at the listening position. It should also be noted that inconsistencies in the physical setup of the loudspeakers can be compensated for using your AV receiver's loudspeaker management functions or a Decoderstation compensation.

accessory kit ac2015wsThe right accessories
Because each customer has a unique set of demands, the Concept E is shipped without a cable set. We have a couple of attractively-priced cable bundles available:

For PC/Soundcards: AC 2005 WS or AC 3005 WS
For DVD-Players/Decoderstation: AC 2015 WS or AC 3015 WS
For ControlStation 2: AC 2045 WS

Mounts/stands
This loudspeaker set is shipped with five table stands for the satellites. Alternatively, wall-mounts are available separately. That makes vertical or horizontal swiveling possible. The speakers also fit with Teufel's M 50 P speaker stands.

Technical Data
5.1 Subwoofer CE 400 SW

5.1 Subwoofer CE 400 SW The high performance of the Concept E 400 SW may redefine the field of multimedia subwoofers. Because there's no more to more.

The 5.1 amplifier distributes the 500 watts maximum performance to six channels. And 225 watts of those are allocated just for the bass in the 63 litre reflex casing. This makes sense, because an imposing 300 mm chassis lays waiting for an ample power supply to allow it to mercilessly play out its advantages: 32 Hz lower limit frequency, 500 watts maximum level – while remaining clean, precise and free from noise.

Three illuminated regulators on the front enable direct control of the total volume, bass proportion and the On/Standby operating mode. The power consumption in the standby mode here remains less than 1 watts.

The Concept E 400 SW is only available as part of a Concept E 400 set.

Satellite Speaker CE 20 FCR

Satellite Speaker CE 20 FCR The compact CE 20 FCR satellite represents the current highpoint in the development of powerful multimedia speakers at Teufel.

Despite being small in size, the micro speaker plays back all medium and high frequencies comprehensively, clearly and powerfully. The 9 x 12.5 cm casing behind a removable, floating mounted grid has a full-grown two-way system with 80 mm mid-tone speaker and 19 mm tweeter; an extremely finely tuned frequency switch ensures the harmonic interplay of these components. The curved front provides better sound radiation than conventional constructions.

An exceptionally linear frequency response is achieved in conjunction with the active filtering of the subwoofer’s multi-channel amplifier, marking new standards in the field of multimedia speakers.

The CE 20 FCR includes a matching table stand, but it can also be attached to the wall and swivelled horizontally/vertically using the optional Shortlock wall bracket. Attaching the speaker to the separately available M 50 P stand allows it to be placed freely in the room.

Right after we unpacked it it was quite clear: the design of the Concept E 400 is amazing and the worksmanship astounding. The basic colour is black with a silver Teufel logo and two stripes on the subwoofer front deliver a colourful acent. On the right side of the subwoofer you find the loudspeakers with a total measure of 30 cm. The satellites match the front of the subwoofer. The lit knob of the woofer further emphasises the high-quality appearance of the subwoofer. When on, there’s a blue ring around the knob, when off the middle button is red. The loudspeakers astound with a huge sound. When individually tested:

Movie
The Teufel Concept E 400 brings the sound clearly and dynamically through, and the bass is precise and strong.

Music
The E 400 surprises more with music than with film. Highs, middles, lows – everything is clear and strong. The bass propells you almost out of your chair. We have to say that we've hardly ever heard a clearer, stronger bass – as well as such a totally precise sound picture.

Games
Ka-Boom! The system also provides perfect sound for the gamer. It really rings your eardrums! With gaming it gives an absolutely perfect impression…

Conclusion
Teufel provides with the Concept E 400 a relatively expensive PC loudspeaker system that we decided during the test was worth every penny. The sound is simply outstanding!

"If you're looking for great surround sound for your games and movies, but haven't got a huge wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket, Teufel has you covered. The Concept E 400s are the latest addition to the Teufel multimedia range.

The speakers produce big sound, far bigger in fact than I would have expected from this all in one system. The key to that big sound is the truly massive subwoofer that's the cornerstone of the whole setup. I've seen bigger subwoofers, but not as a part of a multimedia system like this, and certainly not at this price point. Of course it's not just a subwoofer, since that big black box also houses the amplification for all the satellites as well as for the sub itself.

If you want numbers, the CE 400 subwoofer has a 500W amplifier hiding inside, but 250W of that power is dedicated to driving the sub, leaving 50W per channel for each of the satellite speakers. That's a pretty generous spread of power, and the decision to funnel half of it to the low frequency channel pays real benefits when you're watching an explosive action scene, or playing through a particularly hairy fire-fight in, say, Halo "3" or "Gears of War 2".

As is usually the case with Teufel speakers, they look good as well as sounding good. The subwoofer is finished in glossy black, which will no doubt complement the majority of high definition TVs that it's likely to share a room with. There are, what looks like, three dials on the front of the sub, although the centre one is actually just a button that toggles between standby and on. The right dial is the master volume for the whole set, while the left dial controls the amount of bass, which can be set from a mild atmospheric rumble to window shaking earthquake levels!"

Conclusion
"If you've already got a high definition TV, a games console, a PC and a Blu-ray player, you're probably already thinking about a surround sound system to get the most out of your kit. And if you're in that position, the Concept E 400 and Decoderstation 5 will make the perfect addition."

"Ultimately, if you're looking for an active surround sound speaker set, the Concept E 400s should be high on your list."

"Regardless of what we threw at our test set, its performance consistently got us grinning at the free-and-easy sound quality of this 5.1 set. The sound spatiality delivered by this set is helped along greatly by its five identical satellite loudspeakers – regardless of what direction the sound comes from, it is identical. The Concept E 400's subwoofer impressed us not only because of its sheer capacity for volume, but also because of its excellent tonal quality. When it comes to the stylish acoustic rendering of an explosion, none of the competing subwoofers can hold a candle to Teufel's."
"When it comes to deep bass, the subwoofer delivers extraordinary volumes without compromising precision. Get too happy with the volume, though, and the walls will shake. We found the Concept E 400 to be a blast during testing. When it comes to movies and games, the set's enormous subwoofer is sure-fire fun, but doesn't cut into the quality of music rendering."

Conclusion:
Teufel has reached a milestone in PC sound with the Concept E 400, we're certain of it. Doesn’t matter in which group we placed it, it was a talent whereever we asked it to play. The optics were updated by the Berlin manufacturer, and thus finally a high quality, excellent surround sound system was born – the Concept E 400. It doesn't need to hide from competing HiFi competitors, because it can play with the best of them; no, surpass them. Film enthusiasts will be very happy thanks to the uniformly playing satellites which harmonise perfectly with the subwoofer. On second thought no, they'll still be suprised.

With an entry price of about 330 € the Teufel Concept E 400 is an absolute recommended buy.

Whether we're on the battleground from CoD 5, in the jungle meeting fiends or off hunting on extraterrestrial planets, in all gaming situations the E 400 shows its best side. Shell mortar and explosions were played by the powerful subwoofer perfectly in the scene – the five loudspeakers also contributed to a dynamic surround background sound. It's evident when watching DVDs the new Teufel loudspeaker system is more than just a pretty face, as the dynamic subwoofer arranges the impressive atmosphere. We've seldom heard the bomb attack in "Wir waren Helden" so realistically portrayed. You can also hear reams of audio effects in "Matrix", as well. Let's say it short and sweet: Hard bass and crystal clear highs will speak and sound for you too!

Conclusion:
For 329,- euro you get a solid, good sounding and modern 5.1 loudspeaker system.

Teufel has, with the Concept E 400, certainly not visually and audibly stumbled. This system looks fresh and is an excellent PC system in its price class, and will sell there and in other classes as well.

That the Teufel system – even at this price – is a considerable acoustic piece is where it hits most of the competition right in the teeth. This set connects without problem to your PC and is equally as good in films and gaming. And furthermore, improved music playback is also there:

Bottom line is that this remains a powerful tool that can claim its proper place in this price class. It sounds excellent, and with the subwoofer possibly too good for the competition – Kudos!

When Teufel reworked its Concept E it was logical that we'd want it in our listening room. With the update of the previous set Teufel didn't just do a facelift, but rather handled all critisised points of the previous set with aplomb. A set has emerged that is considerably more grown up and certainly far removed from the office in the direction of the mid-sized sitting room as well - an area that thanks to a considerably upgraded optic look feels right at home.

The satellites weren't just included for optical reasons by Teufel, but also freed from the office thanks to their chic stands. The mighty subwoofer was completely reconstructed and now comes in a smaller column. Soundwise the set knows how to surprise, as it offers a precise and finely detailed high tones range coupled with excellent homogeneity. The highlight of the set is easily the gigantic subwoofer. It delivers enormous play and puts a grin on our face with its massive, deep bass.

The Concept E 400 is quite alone on the sound floor, as the competitors clearly need to add to their ranks to get above this one. The only real competitor is the in-house Motiv 5 – but that's only necessary if it's also to play music […] Due to its outstanding sound performance for a relatively small price it's no wonder that the excellent Concept E 400 receives our Excellent Hardware Award.

Pros:
• Great looks
• Slim subwoofer
• Very homogeneous sound picture
• Excellent subwoofer
• Outstanding sound
