  1. What room sizes is the Concept P suitable for?
We recommend the Concept P for reproducing sound in listening zones of up to 20m². The set sounds best in these dimensions. To calculate the number of square metres, you only need to take the area being used for acoustics into consideration. Deduct any adjoining parts of the room, e.g, eating areas.

In particularly high rooms of 3.50 metres or more, the number of square metres should be multiplied by a factor of 1.5. For more modest requirements, with regard to high continuous volumes and / or normal reproduction at maximum slightly increased low volume, the set can also be used in larger areas.

If you have any questions please contact our hotline: (030) - 300 9 300.

  2. Can the Concept P replace a stereo system?
    Yes.

The Concept P is suitable for music reproduction and home cinema sound. It can completely replace any existing standing stereo speakers. As a result of careful development of the satellites we can guarantee stereo sound comparable with much more expensive (and, above all, bulkier) standing speakers.

  3. Can I connect the Concept P directly to a DVD player or PC?
    No.

The Concept P is a partially active system and has a built-in 150 watt amplifier that only supplies the bass tones in the subwoofer casing. That is why an "AV Receiver", i.e. a combination of radio receiver and multi-channel amplifier, is essential for using the Concept P.

The subwoofer is connected from the Line In R input to the Sub Out jack of the AV Receiver using a mono RCA cable, while the five satellites are connected to the five speaker outputs of the AV Receiver using the speaker cable. Connect your signal-emitting source appliances such as DVD players, PC and TV etc directly to the corresponding input jacks on the AV receiver. The overall volume of the system can then be controlled by its remote control. You will need a fully active system to directly connect a PC or DVD player.

  4. Which AV Receivers are suitable for operation on the Concept P?
You can find some of the receivers we recommend for using with the Concept P on our homepage. When making your selection, you can also include later models as well as older models that meet the same technical requirements and other manufacturers' appliances.

  5. Can the 5.1 set Concept P be used on a 6.1/7.1 receiver?
    Yes.

The Concept P is always transmitted in 5.1 standard configuration but can also be operated on a 6.1 or 7.1 receiver with no restrictions. In this instance the corresponding outputs for rear centre signals are simply not used.
    top
  6. Can the 5.1 set Concept P be expanded to a 7.1 system?
The Concept P is only available as a particularly good value complete package. You can expand the 5.1 set with compatible speakers of the required size from our range, at any time. We recommend e.g. two Concept S-FCR satellites.

These short columns make excellent rear centre speakers.

  7. How do I set up my AV receiver correctly?
Select the "small" or "normal" (not "large") setting for the satellites in the AV Receiver's bass management / speaker management ("Speaker Setup"). This guarantees that the satellites can be used fully and the subwoofer and the front speakers can harmonise with each other perfectly.

The subwoofer channel must be set to "On" in bass management / speaker management ("Speaker Setup") on the receiver.
    top
  8. How do I set up my Concept P subwoofer correctly: Cut-off frequency ("Frequency")?
The cut-off frequency is determined by the AV receiver - its settings are dominant. Select 120, 150 or 200Hz.

Make sure that the frequency control on the subwoofer is set to "Maximum".

  9. How do I set up my Concept P subwoofer correctly: Phase?
Listen to a loud piece of music with a lot of bass and ask somebody to change the phase while it is playing. The correct setting of the phase switch depends on the position of the subwoofer in the room.

The position where the bass reproduction can be heard fully (especially in the upper base area) is the right one. In practice, the correct position has often been shown to be the one where the phase controller is at 0°, if the subwoofer is set up near the front speakers.

  10. How do I set up my Concept P subwoofer correctly: Volume?
The volume setting of the subwoofer may be slightly different when playing back music compared with playing home cinema sound, depending on the recording quality and mixing.

Whereas a massive bass element predominates on DVDs with lots of special effects, the desired level is sometimes not reached for music (especially if the set has been set up for ideal DVD playback). In this case, the user’s own taste is the main determining factor in finding the right compromise between the two sources. That way you can gradually find the best volume for the subwoofer.

We do not tend to recommend selecting an automatic setting for the subwoofer using the integrated calibration computer (if the receiver has one) but rather setting the subwoofer channel in the bass management /speaker management ("Speaker Setup") to a high value (between approx. "10 o'clock" and "12 o'clock" on the subwoofer). This guarantees that auto on/standby mode will work; then you can determine the ideal level by carrying out listening tests.

  11. Can I operate the subwoofer using the connected mains plug on the back of my AV Receiver?
    Unfortunately not.

The power requirements of the Concept P subwoofer are usually too high and would damage this kind of mains plug (and therefore the receiver).

  12. Where is the best place to set up my Concept P?
When setting up your Concept P, or any other home cinema system, you should concentrate on the area where the TV/screen and seats are located. Positioning the TV/screen as centrally as possible makes set-up much easier. The recommended set-up information below represents the best possible arrangement for perfect multi-channel playback in your home.

Your available space, your partner or your furniture may not always allow you to arrange the speakers in the ideal manner. Modern AV Receivers offer numerous options for compensating electronically for any compromises in the set-up. Generally speaking, the following rule always applies: you can always use our recommendations as a basis for experimenting with what works best acoustically and optically in your home. Let your ears (and eyes) decide!

  13. Where is the best place for me to set up my Concept P centre and both front speakers?
Because the centre reproduces film dialogue, the centre must be positioned as centrally as possible under or over the TV/screen and inclined or angled towards the listener.

Thanks to magnetic screening, it can also be used right next to the TV set. The front speakers are placed at equal distances to the right and left of the TV in old stereo fashion (distance to listener = distance between the left and right speaker). Alternatively they can also be slightly angled or inclined towards the listening point. It is important that the centre and front speakers are positioned approximately in a line or possibly even on a slight arc towards the TV. Otherwise possible run-time differences can affect the homogeneity of the playback.

Tip: The sound from the standing speakers is better if they are near a wall.

  14. Do the standing speakers have to be positioned at the front and the satellites/wall speakers at the back?
    Not at all.

They have the same technological equipment so the wall satellites can also be set up in front and the standing speakers can also be set up at the back.

  15. Where is the best place to put my Concept P subwoofer?
At an optimum cut-off frequency of 150Hz, the best site for the subwoofer is within a straight line on the wall between both front satellites.

The active bass speaker can alternatively be placed anywhere in the room.
    top
  16. Where is the best place to put my Concept P rear speaker?
The rear speakers should be set up to the left and right either to the side or behind the listening point – ideally at the same height as the front speakers, e.g. on a shelf or directly on the wall.

It is possible to mount them higher (up to 2.10 metres), but we do not recommend positioning them lower (than the front speakers). During operation, the distance between the rear speakers and the listening point should be more than 1.00 metres.

If this isn't possible due to lack of space, please make sure that the front side of the speaker isn't facing you by angling the speakers so that they point into the room.

  17. Which attachments are included?
The Concept P is supplied ex works with a cable set that guarantees the basic functions of the system "out-of-the-box". A stereo cinch cable and 30 metres of speaker cable of 0.75mm2 diameter are included. The cinch cable is used to connect the subwoofer to the receiver (only use one cable strand!).

The speaker cables connect the satellites to the receiver's speaker outputs and can be cut to the right length.

  18. Which other accessories does Teufel recommend?
We recommend using our speaker cable with 2.5mm2 diameter, available as an option, for optimum sound quality in the set. For connecting the subwoofer, the Teufel NF mono RCA cable is the best choice for interference-free bass reproduction. And using a Y adapter, you can use both line inputs on the subwoofer simultaneously, which increases the volume again. If you require any of these recommended attachments you can simply order them, in various lengths, from our shop.

  19. How can I connect thicker speaker cable of 2.5mm2 or 4mm2 cross-section to my small speaker clamps?
The solution is simple - taper the cable ends. Remove around 3cm of insulation from the end of each cable.

Remove around half of the leftover cable by making a cut in the end of the insulation.

Twist the remaining cable by turning the cable on its own axis to make a firm, short but thinner cable strand. This "loss" in diameter does not result in any loss in sound in relation to the total length of the cable.
    top
  20. Is there a better way of tapering the cable ends, instead of using a thinner cable?
The speaker cable resistance is derived from the specific resistance of the conductive material (copper wire) and the length of the cable. Because a speaker is connected to the amplifier via two cable connections, which are connected in series, resistance 2x must be taken into consideration.

This results in the following equation:

Resistance of cable = 2x the specific resistance (approx. 0.02 Ohm mm^2 m^-1) x cable length in m / cable width in mm^2

The individual wires in our cables are not insulated from each other, so the full cross-section of the cable is available between the ends.

This means that the "bottleneck effect" only happens at the ends of the cable.

The transition between the cable and any connector (push terminal, solder connection or terminal post) is always accompanied by a large resistance, contact resistance.

This can be ignored with good versions, when compared with the resistance of the cable as a whole.

    Example:

    Let's consider a cable length of 15m.
The following values for cable resistance can be found using the equation given above.

4mm^2 – speaker cable with tapered cable ends (2cm)

    0.15Ohm

2.5mm^2 – speaker cable without tapered cable ends

    0.24Ohm

The resulting resistance is considerably less if the cable wires are tapered for attachment rather than using a thinner cable.

Please use the following equation if you want to calculate cable resistance yourself:

    0.02 x 2 x cable length / cable width

  21. I'd like to attach my Concept P speakers so that they can be swivelled. Is that possible?
Concept P speakers are very high quality speakers that can radiate to wide distances and it is usually not necessary to assemble them so that they can swivel. Therefore we expressly recommend rigid attachment of these speakers next to the wall using the integrated wall bracket.

If you (have to) choose a swivelling solution because of acoustic or spatial requirements, we recommend the following solution for customers with good DIY skills:

Purchase a pair of Microlock wall brackets per speaker from the Teufel attachments shop. They have the right connections for integrated wall mounting of the satellites.

You should think in advance about whether the speaker should swivel vertically or horizontally and assemble the brackets and speaker accordingly.

  22. The subwoofer won't play, what can I do?
If the power light is on, turn the subwoofer level to "Minimum", disconnect the subwoofer RCA cable from the amplifier, carefully turn the level to high and touch the RCA thermistor of the RCA cable (inside) with your finger.

If you can hear buzzing or crackling, the defect is in the amplifier or its settings. If the subwoofer remains silent, please contact our service department.

  23. My subwoofer is humming. What can I do?
This hum can be caused by the connected devices or disruptions in your electricity current. Please do a test to see which it is.

    1. Remove the RCA cable from the input on the subwoofer. If the hum is no longer heard, go to point B. Otherwise, follow point A.

    A. Attach the net cable of the subwoofer to another electricity outlet (i.e. Kitchen/Bathroom/Bedroom). If the subwoofer still hums, get in contact with our Support team.

Should the hum no longer be there, the disruption was a problem in your power supply, which can, for instance, be caused by dimmers or chargers. To find out where the disruption is, unplug all your devices and work back from there. As soon as the hum is heard, you now know your source of the disruption.

    B. In your case, the "ground hum" is responsible for the disruption. Please proceed as follows to discover your source.

    • Disconnect the cable or satellite port from the TV Receiver and check if the hum disappears or not. If it does, you can use a sheath current filter for the cable outlet to prevent this. For example, the sheath current filter AC 9022 ED. If you have a satellite connection, connect the Satellite Receiver to the optical cable playback source - Teufel Optical Digital Cable

    • If this reason can be excluded, separate all devices from the AV Receiver one at a time until the hum stops. The last connected device is then your hum source and should be separated from the others using a galvanic separation filter (found in a retail shop)

    • If this doesn't work, get in contact with us once again so that we can give an individual, helpful response.

  24. Why doesn't my active subwoofer switch on automatically?
Some AV Receivers/amplifiers emit bass signals via the subwoofer pre-amplifier output so quietly that the subwoofer does not start automatically, because the weak signal is not interpreted as a request to switch on.

To make sure the subwoofer switches on and off correctly in auto mode, we recommend only turning the level control on the subwoofer from "10 o'clock" to "12 o'clock" and increasing the output level for the sub in the receiver's speaker set-up – partly up to the maximum (+10 dB or +12 dB).
