The Motiv 5 Digital is designed as a complete solution – an all-in-one packet, if you will. From a complete Home Cinema system to a luxurious multimedia setup, it’s all included. Have a look below for connection information and further tips.
The Subwoofer
This loudspeaker is directly connected to the decoder with six RCA cables (Front L/R, Center, Rear L/R and Subwoofer). The Decoderstation 5 has 4 x digital and 4 x analogue inputs, thus ensuring you an optimum link to a wide range of devices: PCs, Macs, Notebooks, DVD Recorder/players, game consoles (such as the Xbox or PlayStation), MP3, iPod, satellite/DVB-T receivers, VCR, TV, CD player, MiniDisc player, DJ mixers and many more.
The Computer Connection
The connection to your computer is quickly and easily established through the following steps. Connect the digital output of your sound card to the optical or coaxial cable of the Decoderstation 5 (depending on the digital format of your sound card). Some notebooks and sound cards arrange your digital output over the usual output, which is shifted around for PC control software. Here you’ll need a special cable. Once connected, a crystal clear 5.1 Surround Sound is now assured! You can create a direct connection to the 5.1-analogue input of the Decoderstation 5 should a 5.1-analogue output exist. Please note that the connection tips above are possible for both laptops and desktop computers.
The DVD Recorder / Player Connection
There are no special DVD recorders which must be used in conjunction with the Motiv 5 Digital – every common model is on-target with this system. The DVD Player/Recorder can be connected directly to the Decoderstation 5, needing no separate decoder, as this task is taken over by the Teufel device. The connection is achieved through attaching to either the optical or coaxial cable (depending on the digital format of the individual DVD Player/Recorder) and creates a flawless sound.
The Game Console Connection
Now you can enjoy authentic 5.1 Surround Sound with your Xbox or PlayStation console (as long as you have one with digital outputs). To connect sound to your console, attach the digital cable from your console to the appropriate optical or coaxial cable of the Decoderstation 5. Now you’ll be able to actually hear that enemy sneaking up from behind…
The Satellite Receiver/Premier Decoder/DVB-T-Receiver Connection
If your TV Receiver has digital output, it’s one step to pure, undiluted Dolby Digital sound – connect digital output to digital input and you’re done. If you don’t have a digital output, it‘s still possible to connect your Receiver through the two analogue outputs (L/R) with one of the three analogue stereo input pairs of the Decoderstation 5. Thanks to the Dolby ProLogic in Teufel decoders you’ll always hear an impressive Surround Sound. Better than Stereo, so much better than Mono…
The TV, Video Recorder, MP3 Player, Discman, Walkman, CD Player, DJ-Mixer (and beyond) Connection
The universal abilities of the Decoderstation 5 are also on display here. Any three devices listed above can be attached through their audio L/R output to our external connector box and worked with from there. Dolby Prologic enhances stereo signals by converting them to multi-channel sound for all five speakers as well as the subwoofer, which means only ordinary stereo sound can also be made powerful and dynamic using a Teufel subwoofer.
Ease of Use
The included wireless remote control gives you instantaneous and absolute control of all features and settings, with the large central controller’s volume being easily changed on the device itself.
The Cable Question
Six cables are used to connect to the Teufel Decoderstation 5. All other connection cables from the source to the decoder are usually included with your signalling device.
The Recommended Room Size
The Motiv 5 Digital has been perfectly designed for a direct sound straight from the PC workspace – meaning a relatively short distance from the listener to the loudspeaker. As long as the listening area is within 30 m², you’re able to use the set equally as well in a complete Home Cinema room.
Using the Teufel set as the PC sound system
It’s also best to think about placement of the individual components to assure the best sound – even at your PC workspace. As the middle is where the dialogue is best heard, this speaker should be centrally located over/under/on the monitor. The Front speakers are placed beside the monitor to the left and right or attached to the wall. The ideal placement of these would be at ear level, but an area between .80 cm and 160 cm is also agreeable for sound quality. You can angle or curve the front speakers as well, if needed. The location of the subwoofer is up to your judgement as it does not affect the other speakers, although a placement right between the two front satellites is often ideal.
The rear speaker should be behind the listening area of the front group – ideally at the same ear-or other level you decided upon. If there are different placements and heights or it’s rather inexact, don’t worry – the sound card options will help to compensate for some of this.
Using the Teufel set as a Home Cinema Sound System
It makes sense when setting up your Teufel system as a Home Cinema to pay attention to the cut and size of the room as well as where the TV and sitting area are located. Additionally, it’s also optimal when the listening area is placed directly before the screen.
As the center is where the dialogue is best heard, this speaker must be centrally located under or over the TV and then towards or lateral to the listener. The front speakers are equally placed in the old stereo tradition (distance to the listener is equal to the distance between the L/R box) next to the TV and either settled or attached to the wall. In this situation, we’d recommend the use of the speaker stand M 50 P black and, if necessary, the Shortlock wall brackets. The use of the speaker stands automatically ensures the optimal playback of your satellite boxes, while the Shortlock brackets allow a horizontal and vertical focus for the listener.
For wall or shelf placement, the positioning heights should be between 80 cm and 160 cm. If the values of your sitting area are outside this recommendation, you can move and adjust the angles of the front speakers to the listening area. It‘s most important that the center and main speakers are in a straight line or also a gently curved arc in line with the television.
The location of the subwoofer is up to your judgement as it does not affect the other speakers, although a placement right between the two front satellites is often ideal.
The rear speaker should be behind the listening area on a level with the front speakers. If a higher or lower installation of this rear speaker is required, try to adjust the sound through the bending or curving of the angle of the speakers. It’s recommended that the distance of the rear speaker be on average over 100 cm. If it’s necessary, you can sit closer but then make sure that you do not sit directly in front of the box, rather to the side or within the listening area. Inexact or suboptimal placement can be helped through the Decoderstation speaker setting options.
Wall Brackets/Speaker stands
The set is shipped without wall brackets or speaker stands. The satellites can be frozen in place by the ‚keyhole‘ opening on the back and attached directly to the wall as well. If you wish vertical and horizontal movement on the wall, use the Shortlock brackets.
