Subwoofer CL 900 SW

The design specifications for the Columa 900 were very clear: a great-looking loudspeaker set that seamlessly blends Teufel’s renowned hi-fi sound quality into the living environment. Visual compatibility with flatscreen TVs was also a priority.

Just 8.3 centimetres

Next to the tried and proven column layout of the loudspeakers, the low depth of the column cabinets is a crucial design factor – with a modest depth of only 8.3 cm, these columns can be easily integrated into most environments. Naturally, Teufel made sure that such a sleek exterior would in no way compromise the Columa 900’s excellent acoustics.

Elaborately engineered
The centre column speaker is designed as an elaborate 2.5-way system. Of the four mid-range drivers, the two bottom ones have a lower treble cut-off frequency than the upper two, which reach all the way up to the dome tweeter’s cut-off point.

Fully-fleged hi-fi

This has several advantages: less frequency drop-outs thanks to the elimination of clashing frequency delays between the cabinet and the listener; high load capacity; and a linear frequency range right down to 100 Hz. The unusually low bass crossover frequency of the two bottom drivers adds extra warmth and punch, which will be much appreciated by music lovers who are otherwise sceptical of column speaker designs. Unlike most column speakers, the CL 90 FR is in fact a fully fledged hi-fi speaker – in the guise of a sleek designer column.

D’Appolito array

The D’Appolito array of tweeter and mid-range drivers in the FR speakers is mirrored in the CL 90 C centre speaker. The result is a homogeneous sound field that can only be achieved through identical driver combinations. The slim housing design of the centre speaker integrates seamlessly with a flatscreen TV. The speaker can easily be wall-mounted or attached to the accompanying table mount.

Punchy subwoofer

The visual profile of the centre and column speakers is also reflected by the matching Columa subwoofer. The CL 900 SW has a surprisingly shallow cabinet with gently rounded corners and a subtly convex oval contour. The friendly, almost chubby design of the subwoofer is in stark contrast to the sonic punch it packs – there is no compromise in the bass being delivered here.

Modern aesthetics

As a system, the Columa 900 is the perfect surround speaker set for music lovers who want their loudspeakers to blend in seamlessly with a modern living environment.

Further information about the product Subwoofer CL 900 SW
Two plus a half-way technology
The CL 90 FR column speaker is conceived as a two and a half-way system. Here the total of four mid-range drivers are detached earlier, with the two top drivers working as the crossing points for the dome tweeters.

Advantages of the two and a half-way construction
There's a reduced interference by avoiding playtimes to the ear, a higher power handling, and a better linear response - up to 100 Hz. When in the bass range, running a lower cutoff frequency provides a fuller-bodied, rounder sound that has, up to now, not been available in column sets as a whole - as the skeptical listener could well attest. The CL 90 FR is a flawless HiFi box, regardless of its slim elegant proportions.

Nonstop D'Appolito
The two central sound drivers found in the central speaker (CL 90 C) and the sound drivers on the satellites (CL 90 FCR) are identical - creating a harmoniously simultaneous sound, which can only be created through identical driver arrangements.

Flat for flat
The Columa 900's flat fronts adapt themselves perfectly to your flatscreen. The centre can sit right underneath the wall or be placed on a stand, while the FCR speakers or a second pair of columns fill the back of the room with amazing sound.

The subwoofer
The subwoofer compliments the flat fronts and seamless connections of the front speakers and the centre. The CL 900 SW surprises with the amazing sound that comes from this striking flat subwoofer - 350 watts and two 200 mm woofers can really deliver that bass...

Set selection
In addition to the subwoofer and centre you can either choose four columns (set 1), or a mix of two "short" satellites and two "long" column speakers (set 3). The columns should always be used as the front speakers of the system.
Subwoofer CL 900 SW

Subwoofer CL 900 SW The CL 900 SW transports the visual profile of the Columa satellite speakers into the nether regions of the subwoofer.

This remarkably slim subwoofer with its gently rounded corners and a slightly oval contour surprises with a very balanced bass response. It features two vertically positioned 200 mm drivers that are powered by a 250 watt RMS Class D amplifier.

Packing quite a punch thanks to an unexpectedly large cabinet volume of 45 litres, the CL 900 SW can easily provide sufficient bottom end for rooms sized up to 50 m².

"During the movie's noisy bits, like Hellboy's barney with the Elemental, the Columa is utterly commanding. As the big beanstalk smashes its way through the parked cars, the bangs and crashes are delivered with enough force and intensity to have you using the nearest table as an Anderson shelter. It's the sort of immersive, pulse-quickening performance that plunges you right into the action and doesn't let go until the credits roll.

The superb high-frequency handling of those dome tweeters gives effects an irresistible crispness, augmenting the abundant detail in the movie's high-res sound design and eking out delicate background minutiae that can go amiss on lesser speakers. The top-end detail is forthright and composed, and refuses to buckle even with the volume dial turned up to neighbour-bothering levels. And during the calmer moments it helps make dialogue sound clear and velvety.

The subwoofer also proves to be a formidable presence – the deep rumbles during Hellboy's battle with the Golden Army effortlessly convey the brutality and urgency of the scene. But credit should also go to the low-frequency drivers in the columns, which not only lend extra heft to low-end effects but also blend beautifully with the sub to create a slick, cohesive whole.

Teufel also describes the columns as fully-fledged hi-fi speakers, and after enjoying a range of music material we can see where they're coming from. Our trusty Kind of Blue CD sounds sublime, lending the jazz classic plenty of warmth and emotion."

"Verdict
If you're looking for a stylish 5.1 speaker system that offers sensational sound quality at a very reasonable price then look no further than the Columa 900. It may lack the power and grandeur of the Teufel System 9, but the fact that it even comes close at this price is reason enough to give it a whirl."
