Recommendation for Hardware: Sound Cards

Recommendations from Lautsprecher Teufel for sound cards!

Which sound cards give you the best performance that our loudspeaker systems have to offer?

Nearly all computers sold today come with a built-in sound card. There are a variety of sound cards available, ranging from the conventional ones for the PCI expansion slot on your computer and ones integrated into the motherboard, to even external USB solutions. It truly does not matter whether your computer has a normal stereo sound card or a multi-channel one with digital decoder - Teufel active loudspeaker sets are suitable for nearly all types of sound cards. To help you decide which model offers the best solution for your needs or how to maximise the potential of your existing sound card, we have compiled the following information on combining your sound card with a speaker set.

The right sound card for your Teufel system
Regardless of their technical specifications, current sound cards can be divided into two categories:

1. Stereo sound cards:
These widely used sound cards reproduce the sound on two channels (left and right). The sound on many computer games, CDs, MP3s and MDs comes in stereo. Stereo sound cards are excellently suited for use with Teufel speaker sets. Although the stereo signal is only sent over two channels, the other loudspeakers do not remain silent. An integrated circuit distributes the sound over all channels and reproduces it on all loudspeakers.

2. Multi-channel sound cards:
Unlike their stereo counterparts, these sound cards are equipped with an integrated decoder that reproduces the audio signal over all channels (5.1/7.1). These sound cards have an analogue multi-channel output that can be connected to the Teufel systems. The majority of DVD audio channels (Dolby Digital and/or DTS), DVD-Audio and a variety of computer games with surround sound (for example, EAX) feature multi-channel sound. There are multi-channel sound cards with 5.1 and 7.1 output, where the latter are backwards-compatible, meaning that they can be used on 5.1 systems as well.

For your sound card to properly operate with multi-channel functionality on a Teufel system, it needs to have an integrated decoder for Dolby Digital and/or DTS and feature analogue outputs for the individual channels.

Note:
Sound cards with a digital output only are often also sold as 'suitable for surround sound'. However, you can only reproduce digital surround sound using an external decoder such as the Teufel decoderstation 3, which is why you cannot use these sound cards with the Teufel active speaker sets, unless you are also using the Teufel decoderstation 3!
