Overview of our technologies

THX Certified
The home cinema standard

THX was designed and created for transferring exactly what the sound engineer built into the recording directly to your ears. With the world’s first certified THX Select 2 set, you’re guaranteed bombastic surround sound wherever you sit in your room.

The System 5 THX Select 2 Certified speaker set delivers breathtakingly precise high and mid tones accompanied by an earth-shakingly deep bass for full home cinema or music enjoyment.

The three main speakers have an indentical construction featuring integrated midrange drivers with flat membrane technology for the following advantages: zero phase shifting, reduced distortion, and no noise. Frequencies above 2000 Hz and taken up by the adjacent dome tweeters.

Specialised two-way dipole speakers are the backbone of this set. These two dipoles contain two tweeter/midrange driver combinations per side separated by a full 180 degrees. The diffused sound they transmit plays a significant role in the set's tonal integrity.

Why buy a surround system (much less a THX set) with a subwoofer bigger than your fridge? Enjoy easy room placement with the two cubic Teufel S 5000 SW subwoofers (400 watts RMS!) – as well as the simply overwhelming sound they deliver.

Instead of a single, super-sized subwoofer, we ship System 5 THX Select 2 with two compact subwoofers. Both S 5000 SW THX Select 2 subwoofers integrate with ease into any home interior: They're small and easy to install.

It all comes together for a gripping entertainment experience. As TechRadar UK put it:

"When Batman thudded down into the roof of an escaping van, I was almost lifted out of my seat. The system can go from loud to quiet effortlessly. I also loved how well the subwoofers blended with the small speakers, without any trace of a "hole" between the two sorts - impressive considering the size of the surrounds."

We couldn't have said it better. A good surround sound system needs to be comprised of high-quality speaker components, but the magic happens when it becomes more than the sum of its parts.

Worth every penny System 5 at the Select 2 level marks a new quality milestone regarding surround sound in the average living room at a price that maximises the advantage of direct-distribution by the manufacturer.

Technical Details:

  • 5.2 loudspeaker set with THX Select 2 certification
  • Film soundtrack & music reproduction on a THX level for large & medium rooms
  • Cinema version includes dipole speakers for the rear
  • 2 subwoofers (400 watt) with 300 mm bass drivers
  • Flat membrane speakers for precise sound
  • Recommended for rooms up to 50 m²
Advantages of THX Certification
THX Select 2 Certification guarantees a product of the highest audio quality, and only those who measure up to the rigorous standards of the THX certification program are able to use it to designate their products. In 1996, Teufel became the first German loudspeaker company to achieve this distinction. The System 5 THX Select 2 is the product of our many years' experience with this exacting standard and became the first ever set to receive THX Select 2 certification.

Subwoofer S 5000 SW

Within the 55 litre enclosure, a 300 mm neodymium high-excursion down-firing woofer creates fulminating bass. Thanks to Teufel’s proprietary Air Stream Bass technology, no wind noise will disturb your enjoyment of movies, games and music.

Flat-diaphragm front speakers

The main speakers have an indentical construction featuring integrated midrange drivers with flat membrane technology for the following advantages: zero phase shifting, reduced distortion, and no noise. Frequencies above 2000 Hz and taken up by the adjacent dome tweeters.

"We were unable to uncover any flaws in the sound."
Allround-PC 04/2011
Sound quality

The highs are high, the bass is deep – this sort of description would do the System 5 THX Select2 an injustice. We experienced a room-filling sound during our test like never before, a sound normally only experienced in cinemas. Both subwoofers support the speakers with an intensely forceful power, so that some of the action scenes could have been taking place right alongside of the listener: A clarity and succinct coherence without equal. The quality of the sound can, in this case, only be given the highest possible rating.

Film music is transformed into a new experience and even Playstation games utterly transport the player into an imaginary world thanks to an incomparable sound image.  In the THX mode, the system unfolds its full – to be interpreted literally in this case – power. We were unable to uncover any flaws in the sound. The system doesn’t seem to have an limits in the physical location we put it in, which began to vibrate with the truly deep bass frequencies.

With the System 5 THX Select2, Teufel really did an outstanding job. Whoever hears this system, will want to watch every movie over again so that certain scenes can be burned into memory with even more power and vividness. Both subwoofers, capable of reproducing every bass frequency without any limitation, play no small role in this. With this, according to the manufacturer, world’s first loudspeaker set with THX Select2 certification, Teufel markedly pulls away from the competition. The price/performance ratio is just about unbeatable. The system can be purchased on Teufel.de for 1,599 Euros. This, however, does not include accessories such as the Y adapter for connecting to the subwoofer. Since generally everyone will need this, it would have been the icing on the cake. The total result is still outstanding. With this system, Teufel offers a nearly incomparable product that offers an extremely pleasurable listening experience.

"The 6 Berlin loudspeakers are unimpressed by heavy action scenes. When roofs are blown off or wndows blasted open in 'X Men,‘ the Teufel set seems to be really in its element. With a tone that's more even that JBL speakers, one has the feeling of being closer to the action, and in the previously mentioned thunderstorm at the beginning of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith,’ the low frequency surge resounds longer and fresher. Teufel’s set creates more of a cinema atmosphere thanks in no small part to the diffuse dipole dispersion in the back. Even sets from Canton and Nubert can’t match it.”

"Bigger sound for smaller rooms."
Home Cinema Choice 01/2010
[...]You get two whacking greate cartons with full-size subwoofers inside (hooray) and five speakers no bigger than the regular bookshelves you might find in a kid's room [...]

Call the police!
[...] But the business of these boxes is film soundtracks. I slapped Dark Knight into the Blu-ray deck and settled down for the ride...

Filmed in large chunks in the IMAX format, the soundtrack of Dark Knight has a serious level of difference between quiet parts and the most literally explosive. As the film begins, you get quiet and tinkly sounds, followed by a big smash, as the crooks set up a wire from one building to the next. The performance capabilities of the Teufel system suddenly become clear. Like a full set of bike leathers that make their owner look silly whilst doing the weekend shop, but badass when the dude is on his Ducati, these speakers, once fed a good slice of power, came to life and absolutely stonked.

All that the THX certification implies is in there. Great directionality, superb placement of sounds around the room due to excellent off-axis performance, and a bass-end that is literally stupefying.[...]When Batman thudded down onto the roof of an escaping van, I was almost lifted out of my seat. The system can go loud from quiet effortlessly.

I also loved how well the subwoofers blended with the small speakers, without any trace of a 'hole' between the two sorts - impressive considering the size of the surrounds.

Get set, go
[...] You will either need cool neighbours or a detached home, as they do go very loud and with absolutely brain-splitting dynamics.

HCC Verdict:
THX Select 2 certification delivers huge impact; excellent value for money.

Less suitable for 5.1 music than some; a bit ugly, too.

At first sight, you could be forgiven for being slightly underwhelmed by the appearance of the Teufel THX Select 2 Cinema set. [...]

The performance capabilities of the Teufel system suddenly became clear. Like a full set of bike leathers that make their owner look silly whilst doing the weekend shop, but a badass when the dude is on his Ducati, these speakers, once fed a decent slice of power, came to life and absolutely stonked.

All that the THX certification implies is in there. Great directionality, superb placement of sounds around the room due to excellent off-axis performance, and a bass-end that is literally stupefying. However, the main five speakers do not seem that efficient, and I needed to crank ten percent more than I normally would to get the satisfying reference level.

At this point, the two 12in subwoofers, which had been left at the little mark that says "THX" on the main knob's marking, had to be turned down a touch by way of the LFE level on the remote. With that sorted, it was back to the film and, as the villains got offed one by one in the early sequences, I was beaten into joyfull jelly - metaphorically speaking.

When Batman thudded down into the roof of an escaping van, I was almost lifted out of my seat. The system can go from loud to quiet effortlessly. I also loved how well the subwoofers blended with the small speakers, without any trace of a "hole" between the two sorts - impressive considering the size of the surrounds.

The Teufel System 5 THX Select 2 is a fantastic set with clear, dynamic and realistic sound. All loudspeakers in this system sound balanced and harmonise perfectly together. The bass is hefty, deep and before everything else extremely powerful. With them you have a strong sound - perhaps too strong for the average sitting room if you ever give consideration to others living in your flat complex!

The list price for this set is € 1599,-, and for that you get two subwoofers, three identical front speakers and fantastic switchable Dipoles. This set is amazingly flexible, allowing breathtaking action scenes or seeming participation in live concerts right from the comfort of your own couch. This set is really worth every cent!

Area DVD 10/2009

That's how we present this 5.2 set for ambitious home cinema fans – impressive in the room yet clean, neutral tone, enormously dynamic, excellent level controls and with a bearish active subwoofer included that sets new standards for the price class the System 5 THX Select 2 is in.The optics work so well that it's also easy for this set to seamlessly integrate in an elegantly designed sitting room.

Perfect playing with all components – dipoles for a extensive room atmosphere, two active subwoofers for for homogeneous bass play, three identical front speakers for acoustic uniformity and excellent, imperceptible effects changes from speaker to speaker – it also gives a shock to experienced home cinema enthusiasts because it is quite difficult to catch this system "in the wrong."

Sure – whoever listens to lots of music in stereo would better take a multichannel ensemble whose components include two large speakers for the left and right front – but only when real, true film sound with amazing special effects isn't so important. When both are important we recommend to bring in a separate stereo solution at the start as such an authentic home cinema system as the System 5 THX Select 2 is simply not possible with just two standing loudspeakers and a landscape.

• Amazing room atmosphere
• Neutral, surprising sound
• Active subwoofer with amazing lows
• Absolutely homogeneous front sounds thanks to three identical loudspeakers
• Intense surround sound feeling thanks to thoroughly construted dipoles
• Excellent large dynamics
• Fantastic fine dynamics, especially considering the price class
• Elegant visuals
• Very fair sales price

There's a 600 euro price difference between the Teufel System 5 THX Select and the Select 2. At a glance it appears that the two home cinema systems have a lot that ist he same, but the second impression shows marked differences. AV Magazine tests to see if the extra money is worth it for the THX Select 2. […]

Delivery and Equipment
A System 5 THX Select 2 home cinema set is comprised of seven loudspeakers. Two active subwoofer S 5000 SW, three identical S 500 FCR front speakers and two S 500 D Dipoles. There are also connections for further speakers on the boxes. In the online shop at Teufel you can find the appropriate cables and connection materials to purchase. […]

Before the installation take a quick glance at the Installation guide. It's well structured and informative, detailing the best setups for the boxes depending on the rooms it will be placed in, and gives great setup and usage tips. The Teufel set, tested here in the Cinema version with two dipole loudspeakers, offers outstanding subwoofers for a real low feel.

Cinema or Concert?
If you decide to go to the internet site from Teufel and order a THX Select 2, you must decide between two versions: the Cinema 5.2 set or the Concert 5.2 set. Both combinations include three identical S 500 FCR front loudspeakers and two S 5000 SW subwoofers. With a price from 1599 euro the sets both cost the same. So what's the difference?

The loudspeakers for the back sound area. While with the concert set you receive two more of the front S 500 FCR loudspeakers, for the Cinema version you receive two dipole boxes for the back. The test here at AV Magazine we used the cinema set, which offers diffuse radiation characteristics and a different acoustic overall, which you'll see in the following paragraphs.

THX Licencing
Check out what's inside: home cinema listening culture in its richest form! […]

Depending on the room volume used, the speaker test must be customised. For example, a box set that would receive the Select 2 seal must achieve specific values within a listening distance of 3.65 metres, maximum. Besides for the omnidirectional sound distribution and levels linearity, the electromechanical system resiliency plays a major role. If the percentage of distortion in the sampled measurement signal from a particular volume exceeds a fixed value, the manufacturer or petitioner must make it better. If all strict guidelines are complied and the product has passed all its tests, it's awarded the hoped-for seal. Which happened with the System 5 THX Select 2 from Teufel. […] The best part about this ist hat the customer benefits from being able to acquire a technically sophisticated and powerful player in the category according to the product needed.

Front and Centre loudspeakers
[…] A major THX target is a single speaker that can be used for the channel front left, middle and right. With the System 5 THX Select 2, the compact S 500 FCR loudspeaker is used in this area which handily has a width of 32 and a height of only 21 cm. This three kilo box has a body from medium density fibreboard which is covered with a plastic film. The dark brown overlay mimics the Wenge which is so hot at the moment, including the typical structure. […]

Three different variants are available for a flexible placement in your sitting room. When positioned on normal surfaces, the included rubber feet are glued under the S 500 FCR. For wall mounting, two key-lock attachments are included on the back of the S 500. When a horizontal placement is needed, the speakers can be mounted with a M6 on a commercial 90 degree angle wall. The third option ist o mount it on a speaker stand, which uses a M6 to fix the speaker to the stand.

The S 500 D surround loudspeaker
Thanks to the spacer and wall connection the S 500 D surround loudspeakers are quickly and easily set up on the wall. In comparison to the front speakers that are directly connected to the wall, the S 500 D surround loudspeakers have three possible sound panels. […]

Mounted on the rear side walls of the listening room, the Dipoles shine from both the front and the back. […] The connection to the home theater amplifier by speaker cable is achieved through massive screw terminals. The interface is gold-gilded to ensure a minimal resistance. A clear plastic insulation prevents dangerous short circuits between the poles.

Subwoofer S 5000 SW
[…] The large operating and port field of the active model in the housing is on the back of the driver. A purebred digital amplifier can generate a demand of up to 200 watts of power to really pump the bass. […]There is no high level inputs or outputs and a separator frequency slider. The front of the S 5000 SW has a plastic application affixed there that has a lit diode so that the small display placed there can be read.

In the system menu the audio-amplifier combination places the crossover frequency between the subwoofer and the satellites at 80 Hz. After the individual loudspeakers were aligned, we configured the different loudspeakers and the listening area on the configurations menu of the AV Receiver. In our Panasonic Blu-ray DMP-BD80 the fantasy action film Batman, The Dark Knight was ready to play. The loudspeaker group immediately made it clear exactly where Teufel and THX sound emerges. The impressive sound of the hospital explosion shook the adjacent editorial rooms. Two 30 cm subwoofers presented a huge bass performance defined by enormous depth and high level resistance.

Through using the uniform loudspeakers for front left, middle and right, the front sound picture sounded very tidy. The dialogue from the S 500 FCR was also very clear and quite easily understood. The accurately defined stereo front also offers a realistic spacial area which effectively delivered special effects through the listening area. The S 500 D dipole loudspeakers delighted front the back surround sound area with diffuse, well distributed room sound. […]

Particularly fantastic is when Batman drives in his Lamborghini. As Bruce Wayne goes under the one way in Gotham City, you really think you're sitting right by the camera man. Screaming tires, crunching metal and heavy motor roaring are brought forward authentically by the Teufel Loudspeakers. It really brings definite pleasure to the ears and goosebumps to the skin. The total set sounds exactly like a home cinema ought to sound.

"In a word - sensational."
TrustedReviews.com 02-2011

Teufel has modified its successful System 5 to create the world's first THX Select 2-certified speaker package, which means it's designed to meet the exacting sonic standards laid down by George Lucas and his band of hardcore home cinema crusaders.

The idea behind THX Select 2 is to deliver the best possible sound quality in rooms where the distance from the listening position to the screen is between 10 and 12 feet. To that end, THX Select 2 certified speakers must feature controlled directivity, in order to achieve "a full soundstage with precise imaging for all types of audio content", and that's one of the things Teufel has tweaked to earn this certification.

Another is the inclusion of two subwoofers, which helps the system reach THX's bass requirements (105dB continuous output at 25Hz minimum frequency, at -3 dB). To get that sort of performance from a single sub it would have to be absolutely massive, so instead Teufel has opted for two reasonably-sized bass boxes, which make the system more 'living room-friendly'.

For the front and centre channels, you get three S 500 FCR speakers, an upgraded version of its predecessor, the M 550 FCR. It's the first speaker ever to get the THX Select 2 seal of approval so we're deep in uncharted territory here. Key to their performance is their newly-developed flat diaphragm midrange drivers, which radiate mids from the entire effective surface area and avoid pesky phase shifts that conventional cone drivers can suffer from.

Teufel also reckons that the drivers' rigid sandwich construction ensures a balanced frequency response, while the central placement of the dome tweeter improves sound radiation and lets you hear full-range sound outside of the sweet spot. And because they fit flush into the enclosure, you don't get any detrimental diffraction effects off corners or edges.

Unsurprisingly, the build quality of these front/centre speakers is phenomenal. Weighty, robust and clad in a fetching old school dark wenge finish, they really look the part. The speaker grille is a removable hood that fits over the front without the need for bolts, another measure designed to keep the distortion wolf from the door.
At 16cm deep, they're surprisingly compact compared with Teufel's other high-end speakers, and can be mounted on optional M 4002 P stands or on the wall using the pre-attached brackets on the back. Also on the rear is an alcove housing a pair of sturdy gold-plated binding posts, found on all of the system's speakers.

Because this is a movie-centric system through and through, you get dipole speakers for the rear-channels, in this case a pair of S 500 D's - again the first of their type to be THX Select 2 certified. As opposed to direct radiating speakers, which fire sound towards the listener, these three-way dipole speakers create a diffuse, enveloping effect, as if the sound is coming from the rear walls, which is preferable for movies.

Again they're beautifully constructed and effortlessly elegant. Each one features 100mm midrange drivers and 25mm dome tweeters on the front and back, while the speaker grilles on each side also slip on without any bolts or clips.

The sub charged with the task of delivering THX's tricky bass demands is the S 5000 SW, which boasts a 300mm neodymium woofer and musters 200W of firepower. As mentioned, you get two with this system, removing the need for one massive back-breaking box, but their 37 x 54 x 47cm dimensions aren't exactly compact either - it could still take some serious reshuffling to squeeze two of these bad boys in your front room.

They're built like a tank, dressed in dark wenge and sport a fetching silver blob on the front that makes them look a bit like Star Wars droids. On the back of each one you'll find a phase switch, volume dial (with a mark helpfully showing THX's recommended level) and RCA input and output.

But enough of its features, how does the system sound? In a word sensational. First of all, it's earth-shakingly powerful - feed it any of the loud, chaotic action scenes from Transformers on Blu-ray and the ferocious sound could strip wallpaper. But the beauty is you don't need an amp the size of a house to make them sing - the system's high efficiency means you get decent results even from modestly-rated amps.

The potent soundstage is boosted in no small part by those two subs, which work in perfect harmony and dig down to the very depths of the frequency range. When Megatron and Prime lock horns at the movie's denouement, there's lots of deep bass rumbling and the enormous explosions really thumb you in the chest. There's no flab to the low frequencies - they're tight and forthright, which allows them to respond to sudden bangs and pops without any delays that could upset the rhythm of a scene.

But it's not all about brute force. The sound is incredibly detailed too, and therefore the Teufels are able to explore the finer nuances of the movie's few quiet scenes with real finesse. This also lets voices come through clear and natural at all times, even when robots are clattering around the soundstage.

The system is also admirably cohesive - the fronts, centre and rears are beautifully matched, and don't reveal any tonal variation as sounds sweep from front to back. The subs contribute to this unified front, blending seamlessly with the other speakers - all of which results in massively entertaining movie playback.

Despite its home cinema credentials, System 5 is also a dab hand with music, handling DVD-Audio, CDs and Blu-ray music discs with the level of refinement we've come to expect from Teufel speakers. The smooth, elegant and insightful sound is pure aural seduction.

Overall then, the System 5 really delivers on its promises, providing a fast, feisty and well-integrated sound that lives up to its Select 2 certification. We can't even quibble with the price, as it's a reasonable amount to pay for such an accomplished system, which not only comes with George Lucas' seal of approval but now ours too.

"THX is coming home."
Heimkino 01-2003

With the world's first THX Select 2 home cinema system, Teufel has really succeeded at their turn of the dice. Not only has the Berlin manufacturer created a compact system for modern sitting rooms that needed dedicated home cinema sets, but this 5.2 set meets all THX requirements and would fill a larger room with full cinema sound. Finally you must really appreciate the performance when related tot he price, an extremely fair value for the money, as you get a 5.2 system for 1,599- euro that really is a blast to play. Just one question remains: "What could you possibly make better in this set?"

"Perfect for concert clippings and action films."
Stereoplay 06/2009

"The absolutely extravagant use of sound-generating surface area lends not only to this set’s exorbitant dynamic reserves, but also to its considerably energy-efficiency. This means that System 5 has achieved new heights in bass power and low-resonance and dissonance-free fundamental tone stiffness equivalent to a receiver in the 800-euro power range (see the test review in 1/2009).

In addition, this system guarantees amazing speech and text intelligibility, even in complicated and noisy scenes. Even the set costs mentioned in the 03/2009 issue available at double the price were hardly any better. With its imposing aura, this new Teufel set is perfectly designed for playing back concert footage and action films, which are sure to be a regular feature.

The producers of James Bond's classic Casino Royale would have certainly been quite impressed by the close proximity reproduced by this superb Teufel set to a professional cinema resolution. Take, for instance, the car chase scene through the road works site, where wood and metal parts are crashing and flying everywhere. The bass tones remain true to life, thanks to the diffusely radiating rear speakers.

And what about pure stereo sound? Well, this is expertly mastered by this seven-component, low-resonance and broad-banded set as well. This leaves one thing that's without a doubt: the System 5 THX Select 2 is – in terms of purchase price, dimensions, and sound quality – simply a blockbuster!"

A speaker set at great value, with dipoles and two woofers for THX Select 2. Played loudly or softly, it sounds incredibly alive, spatially authentic, and full of bass. In respect to price and size, it is a real smash!

• Sound: Absolutely top! (57 points)
• Overall grade: Good – very good (76 points)
• Price/Performance: Outstanding

Help regarding this product
Do I need a THX Select 2 receiver to use System 5 THX Select 2?
No. You do not necessarily need a THX amplifier to use the THX Select 2 speakers from System 5. The receiver does need to be capable of bass management, and should be able to set a separation frequency (80 Hz) for the THX speakers and the THX subwoofer. Also, the amplifier needs to deliver at least 100 watts RMS output per channel. A THX Select 2 receiver guarantees compatibility.
How do I correctly equalise the two subwoofers?
We recommend turning up the volume level controls all the way on both subwoofers. Listen to a piece of music you are familiar with that has intensive basses.

Alternatively, you can also use the test sound of the receiver/amplifier. Now ask a second person to lower and raise the volume of the one subwoofer and then that of the other subwoofer. As a small aid, you can disconnect the normal speakers so that only the subwoofers are running. Both subwoofers are correctly adjusted when you have the feeling that both are equally loud.
What are the advantages of connecting a second subwoofer?
An additional subwoofer provides the following advantages:

1. The second membrane surface distinctly increases the sound pressure.

2. When using an additional identical subwoofer, the following also applies:

From a purely technical view the performance is doubled, yet the level only increases metrologically by roughly 6 dB which corresponds to a doubling but which the human ear cannot truly perceive. The sound is louder, but is not perceived as twice as loud.

3. In some rooms, the room acoustics can be significantly improved by a second subwoofer. Every room has a room resonance frequency that is additionally amplified by the room due to the frequency emitted by the speaker - the result is often droning or reverberant basses. A second subwoofer can accurately counteract this frequency; the result is a dryer bass.
What is THX Select 2?
The new THX Select 2 certification only refers to receivers/amplifiers; therefore there are no speakers according to the THX Select 2 standard.

The new procedure extends the previous THX Select standard by THX Listening Modes. These default settings optimise the sound to a given application case: The THX Cinema Mode is intended for playing back movie soundtracks, THX Music for normal music programmes, and the THX Games Mode is meant to improve the background music of computer games.

The familiar optimisation procedures Timbre Matching™, Bass Management™, Adaptive Decorrelation™ and Re-Equalization (Re-EQ™) are naturally a part of THX Select 2.

As opposed to the THX Ultra 2 standard, THX Select 2 is intended for smaller to medium-sized rooms and is therefore less demanding as to undistorted maximum levels.

To receive the THX Select 2 logo, the hardware - as for all THX standards - must comply with comprehensive quality standards and exhibit an even more reduced noise performance as compared with the familiar THX Select standard, among other things.

Receivers/amplifiers certified with THX Select 2 can be optimally combined with a THX Select speaker set - like our multiple prize-winning System 5, for example!
Do I need a THX amplifier for the THX speakers?
Not necessarily!

The receiver/amplifier must have bass management where the frequencies are distributed for the THX front/centre speakers and the THX subwoofer (cut-off frequency 80 Hz).

Also, the amplifier should exhibit a minimum rating of 100 watt per channel and match the speakers for performance (amplifier sine wave output = approx. long-term load of speaker).
Are THX speakers suitable for listening to music?
Of course.

Since THX speakers are optimised to play back multi-channel signals (4 or 5.1 channels), the front speakers permit the precisely staggered and very true to detail spatial playback, while the surround speakers ensure realistic room characteristics.

Both are also ideal requirements for playing back music.
Is THX compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS?

The objective of THX home cinema systems is to play back film soundtracks with as much authenticity and quality as the original mix from the sound studio.

In all studios used for film dubbing, the soundtracks are mixed in a 4-channel version (Dolby Surround) and in a 5.1 channel version. The acoustics, equalizer settings and speaker configurations are absolutely identical.

THX systems are thus always able to play back soundtracks produced in this way absolutely true to the original. Because of the high technical and tonal requirements, the THX standard can be compared with the TÜV (German Technical Control Board) for cinema sound.

As opposed to the THX quality standard, DTS and Dolby Digital are procedures for compressing sound data.
What is so special about a THX System?
THX systems are the ultimate home cinema components.

All THX-licensed devices and speakers must demonstrate certain technical properties so that they can play back movie soundtracks produced for cinemas and correspondingly powerful cinema sound systems absolutely true to the original for home cinemas as well. This is only possible up to a certain point with conventional hi-fi systems.

The most important requirements for excellent home cinema sound are:

• That despite the considerable size difference between cinemas and home cinemas, the movie soundtrack can be played back in comparably smaller rooms with the correct tonal balance and three-dimensionality.

• That all sound channels are played back very precisely despite the complexity of a multi-channel soundtrack to be able to precisely locate and allocate all noises and voices.

• That the subwoofer is perfectly coupled to the main speakers.

• That the front speakers are (by sound) identical - indispensable for harmonious sound playback.

THX systems satisfy these requirements perfectly, as they consider all running processes concerning playback while the movie soundtrack is being mixed.
What are the differences between THX Ultra 2, THX Select and THX Multimedia?
THX is a quality standard that guarantees the best possible playback for a specific room size. Since THX was originally developed for cinema theatres, the specifications apply to room sizes that far exceed the average living room size.

THX currently differentiates three standards for speakers: THX Ultra 2, THX Select and THX Multimedia.

THX Select 2 only applies to AV Receivers/amplifiers.
THX Ultra 2 corresponds to the earlier THX with the uncompromising design of the components.

Comparison of the three THX standards:

Front speaker
• THX Ultra 2: Angle of radiation and frequency response strictly limited requirement, D'Appolito arrangement of speaker systems prescribed.
• THX Select: More generous specifications for angle of radiation and frequency response.
• THX Multimedia: Radiation behaviour corresponds to THX Select.

Surround speaker
• THX Ultra 2: Dipoles are compulsory.
• THX Select: Dipoles recommended, but not compulsory.
• THX Multimedia: Direct emitters in every respect.

Subwoofer - transfer frequency

• THX Ultra 2: 80 Hz
• THX Select: 100 Hz
• THX Multimedia: 130 Hz

Volume level

• THX Ultra: Continuous load 105 dB (front) / 102 dB (surround).
• THX Select: Short term load 105 dB (front) / 102 dB (surround).
• THX Multimedia: 103 dB at the listening location/desk at approx. 50 cm distance.

Performance profile

• THX Ultra 2:
More output performance than normal AV Receivers. Complies with the strictest requirements for minor background noise and minor distortion. Is designed for performance needs of large listening rooms up to 150 m².
• THX Select:
Structure of AV Receiver is simpler and thus more reasonably priced. Less performance required, therefore suitable for smaller and medium-sized listening rooms up to approx. 50 m².
• THX Multimedia:
Pure PC and/or multimedia speakers for use at the computer.

Speaker set-up

• THX Ultra 2: Arrangement and set-up strictly regulated.
• THX Select: Set-up and arrangement simpler and more flexible.
• THX Multimedia: Set-up of front speakers on the desk, rear speakers to the side and behind where you are sitting.
How can I upgrade my THX system to a 7.1 sound format?
With the THX 7.1 amplifiers/receivers, there is always the option of connecting two rear centre speakers. We would also recommend using four rear speakers. Due to the elaborate development of our rear speakers, our models can be used very flexibly for any application. Here we have to differentiate as follows: - You have a THX Select/Ultra 2 device and want to connect two rear centre speakers: if you already use dipoles or direct radiators in your 5.1 system, you have the choice of adding either two more dipoles or two direct radiators as rear centres. For wall mounting and/or at a short distance from seat to rear wall (less than 1.00 m), we would recommend dipoles that are also operated in dipole mode (for System 4 THX, for example, order 2 x additional S 400 D). As soon as you want to place the speaker on stands or on a shelf, we would recommend direct radiators (for System 4 THX, e.g. order 2 x additional S 400 FCR). As soon as you already use direct radiators with your 5.1 system, we would recommend the same type of direct radiators for the upgrade. You have a THX Ultra 2 unit and want to connect two rear centres: a circuit especially developed for THX Ultra 2 devices allows you to use two more direct radiators or two more dipoles in addition to the dipoles used as rear effect loudspeakers.
Which speaker cables does Teufel recommend?
For smaller sets up to Theater 1, we recommend using the 2.5 mm² Teufel speaker cable for optimal sound quality if the required length does not exceed 15 metres.

For Theater 2 and larger systems, we recommend the Teufel cable with 4 mm² cross-section for the front/centre speakers, and the 2.5 mm² cable up to a length of 15 metres for the effect speakers.

Choose a higher cross-section for even greater lengths.
What's behind THX Optimode?
THX Optimode is the latest development of the THX Digital Mastering Program consisting of a series of tests that enable every home cinema user to adjust his system exactly in picture and sound to the Optimode DVD currently in the DVD player.

The first DVD that supported the new feature was "Fight Club" in the Special Edition by 20th Century Fox (NTSC version). The offer has been continually expanded in the meantime.

The tests, which can be played on NTSC as well as PAL DVDs, consist of video tests that are helpful in optimally setting and configuring the TV or video projector, as well as audio tests that guarantee that the sound system is configured perfectly.

The special thing about these tests is the fact that the measuring signals are identical to the reference signals that were used during the final mixing of the relevant DVD. The home cinema system can therefore be co-ordinated accurately and individually to every single DVD with THX Optimode.

The goal of the entire procedure is that the sound and particularly the picture should appear in the home cinema exactly as the producer imagined. Let's assume the film producer wanted to create a certain mood in the film using specific colouring; this only works in the home cinema if the screen at home is just as co-ordinated as in the studio. Thanks to THX Optimode, that is guaranteed as far as possible.

Operating THX Optimode is just as easy: The software on the DVD includes all of the tests. Individually, these are video tests to set the contrast, brightness, colour, colouring, control of the correct ratio of picture length to picture width and the possibility to test the general qualities of the monitor.

In addition, there are audio tests for the phases of the speakers, connection of the speakers and the cut-off frequency of the LFE (subwoofer channel). Some tests will clearly show when it is necessary to consult a specialist for the settings.
Can I order the Teufel speakers in different colours than those offered?
To realise the very reasonable sales prices usual for Teufel, it is not possible to offer the speakers in a multitude of housing designs.

This circumstance would drive up the production and storage costs, which would result in a significantly more expensive sales price.

A paint shop in your vicinity will surely be able to repaint the speaker housing to your preferred colour without loss of warranty - after expiry of the eight-week right of return.
Which cables do I need to connect a Teufel speaker set to the AV Receiver?
A home cinema system needs speaker cables to connect the satellite speakers to the receivers, and an NF mono RCA cable to connect the active subwoofer to the sub out socket of the AV Receiver.
Is it possible to combine speaker cables with different cross-sections?
To supplement missing cable lengths you can use speaker cables of differing thicknesses without acoustical differences - provided there are no extreme differences in the cross-sections.
Should I rather choose a fully active or a partially active speaker set?
It is compulsory to connect partially active systems to an AV Receiver. This supplies the five to seven satellite speakers with the necessary power. Only the subwoofer works additionally with its own amplifier. The investment in a new system is higher because of the AV Receiver, but the solution is also much more flexible. After all, you can connect several signal sources, such as a TV, satellite receiver, PC, game console and MP3 player to an AV Receiver at the same time.

Fully active set do not necessarily need an AV Receiver. The five to seven satellite speakers here are supplied with power by the amplifiers which are installed in the subwoofer in addition to the subwoofer power amplifier. This saves you the costs of a receiver, but it is usually only possible to connect one source to our fully active subwoofer.

Exceptions here are the Concept E2, the Concept E Magnum Digital, the Motiv 5 Digital, the Concept F, the LT2+R and the Concept S+R.

Naturally you can also equip the fully active systems with an AV Receiver at a later point. The connection is then equal to the partially active sets.
When can I use the rear speakers as direct speakers?
If you aren't able to position the speakers close to the wall as described above, you should use the them as direct speakers. For this purpose the rear switch should be tipped outwards. For use as direct speakers, the rear boxes should be set up to the left and right of the listening position - ideally at the same height, e.g. on a shelf or preferably on a base. If the speakers have to be set up so that they are much higher or lower, it may be advisable to align them to the listening point. For wall mounting it is best to use wall brackets that allow for vertical movement. When using the speakers in direct speaker mode, we recommend that the distance between the two rear speakers exceeds the listening position by 1m. But if you (have to) sit closer, please make sure that the front of the speaker is not pointing directly at you; instead, angle the speakers more into the room.
Can I set up the set in a different way to that described?
The recommended set-up information below represents the best possible arrangement for perfect multichannel playback in your home. Your available space, your partner or your furniture may not always allow you to arrange the speakers in the ideal manner. Try to meet as many of the requirements as possible.

Modern AV Receivers offer numerous options for compensating electronically for any compromises in the set up. Generally speaking, the following rule always applies: you can always use our recommendations as a basis for experimenting with what works best for you, acoustically and optically. Let your ears (and eyes) decide!
My subwoofer is humming. What can I do?
This hum can be caused by the connected devices or disruptions in your electricity current. Please do a test to see which it is.

1. Remove the RCA cable from the input on the subwoofer. If the hum is no longer heard, go to point B. Otherwise, follow point A.

A. Attach the net cable of the subwoofer to another electricity outlet (i.e. Kitchen/Bathroom/Bedroom). If the subwoofer still hums, get in contact with our Support team.

Should the hum no longer be there, the disruption was a problem in your power supply, which can, for instance, be caused by dimmers or chargers. To find out where the disruption is, unplug all your devices and work back from there. As soon as the hum is heard, you now know your source of the disruption.

B. In your case, the "ground hum" is responsible for the disruption. Please proceed as follows to discover your source.

  • Disconnect the cable or satellite port from the TV Receiver and check if the hum disappears or not. If it does, you can use a sheath current filter for the cable outlet to prevent this. For example, the sheath current filter AC 9022 ED. If you have a satellite connection, connect the Satellite Receiver to the optical cable playback source - Teufel Optical Digital Cable

  • If this reason can be excluded, separate all devices from the AV Receiver one at a time until the hum stops. The last connected device is then your hum source and should be separated from the others using a galvanic separation filter (found in a retail shop)

  • If this doesn't work, get in contact with us once again so that we can give an individual, helpful response.
What is a ground hum?
The hum (50 Hz) comes from the 220 volt supply network and is caused by current power flows through the protective conductor. These so-called "ground hums" is caused when you connect two devices that are already grounded on the protective conductor (subwoofer) or the antennae cable (AV Receiver) to the subwoofer cable.

Separate the direct connection by a grounding filter for the antennae cable that is created for it - for instance, the Teufel modell sheath current filter AC 9022 ED. Alternatively, you can use a galvanic separation filter that is looped into the connection between the subwoofer and AV Receiver.

The hum disappears if the antennae cable is separated from the Receiver/Tuner/TV. First try the grounding filter, otherwise the galvanic separation filter.
Where is the optimal place for the subwoofer of my Lautsprecher Teufel Surround System in a 5.1/6.1/7.1 configuration?
The location of a subwoofer with a recommended cut-off frequency of under/equal to 120 Hz can be freely selected and does not affect the other speakers.

Placement within the straight line between both front satellites is ideal - but not precisely in the corner of the room because certain frequency components could be unpleasantly excessive when played back.
How do I determine the right phase setting of the subwoofer?
By setting the phase, you can affect the point at which the membrane of the subwoofer bass speaker moves to the front. This setting makes it possible to optimally adjust the subwoofer to the satellites.

The membranes of the satellites should move to the front at the same time as the membrane of the subwoofer bass speaker, because all speakers of the system must vibrate in phase for optimal playback. This means that (provided the connection has the correct polarity) all drivers must move in one direction when the three front speakers receive a pulse (towards the outside or towards the inside).

If the subwoofer is in line with the front speakers, its bass speaker should have the same direction of movement (phase) - the controller on the woofer is set to "0". If the subwoofer is not between the front speakers, but is to the side of or even behind the listening location, its phase length will not match that of the front speakers. That is why the phase of the subwoofer must be changed in such cases.

So much for the theory. In practice, this means: Listen to a loud piece of music with heavy basses and ask a second person to change the phase during playback. The correct setting of the phase switch depends on where the subwoofer is positioned in the room. The position where the bass playback (above all the upper bass range) sounds the fullest is the correct position. Have fun trying it out!
What's the deal with the so-called bass traps or bass absorbers?
These are usually cubic wood housings (same MDF material as the speakers) with a bass reflex opening that have no membranes and are tuned to a certain frequency (e.g. 40 Hz as for a subwoofer). The frequency to be co-ordinated can be changed by the length and diametre of the bass reflex channel. If, for example, a room has a room resonance frequency of 28.3 Hz and this frequency is also played back in addition by a speaker/subwoofer, the room will begin to resonate at this frequency. This particular frequency is played back amplified.

This can be imagined as droning or booming, which occurs during heavy bass movie scenes such as explosions or certain types of music (Jazz, pizzicato bass). The bass absorber is then tuned exactly to this frequency so that only the speakers/subwoofer play back this frequency. The resonance frequency from the room, which would amplify this frequency, is swallowed by the bass absorber.

If you would like to damp more than one frequency (a room usually has three different frequencies: ceilings and floors, front and back and left and right, and its multiple), you will have to set up three absorbers accordingly.
How is the wattage of a subwoofer with respect to the sine wave and pulse/music performance?
Mono subwoofer:

The wattage (e.g. "360 W") printed on the rear of the subwoofer near the mains plug designates the ability of the power amplifier "to pull" a maximum power rating in the specified range at the moment of switching on (those 360 watt stated as an example).

Consequently, the wattage must correspond to at least the sine wave output of the amplifier, as this sine wave output must be permanently available which the power pack must provide as well.

The pulse/music performance of the amplifier, on the other hand, can exceed the wattage, because the short pulses are buffered additionally by the capacitors in the power pack and are not achieved solely through the performance of the power pack.

Multi-channel subwoofer:

The wattage for a multi-channel subwoofer can also be below the sine wave output, as the specified sine wave output is not requested from every channel at the same time.

For a 5 x 100 watt sinus power amplifier, for example, each of the five channels is able to implement 100 watt sine. However, not all five channels at the same time! This is also unnecessary, as the same signal is never transmitted across all five channels at the same time, thus requesting the same high sine wave output per channel.

That is why the wattage may be, e.g. 300 watt, even if the sine wave output exhibits 5 x 100 watt (= 500 watt).
Which subwoofer cables does Teufel recommend?
What is room resonance frequency?
Room resonance frequency (other terms: room modes, standing waves, resonance frequency) is the frequency at which the vibrations of a voice, a musical instrument or a signal played back over the hi-fi/home cinema system is amplified unnaturally, because the vibrations build up between the walls as well as the floor and ceiling.

It is calculated of the sound velocity divided by 2 and divided by the room length [ 340 m/s: 2 : 6 m = 28.3 Hz (=1/s) ] or, more simply: 170 divided by the room dimension (length, width or height). The greatest distance between two parallel walls is taken as first standard value. For a room of 4 x 6 metres, this would be 6 metres. Strictly speaking, you would have to calculate the room resonance frequency for further parallel walls (for the 4 metres and for the ceiling height).

Overlaying resonances are also possible if the room dimensions are very close to each other. (2.8 metres high, 3 metres wide and 5.6 metres long). The resonance at 2.8 metres is repeated as multiple (times 2) at 5.6 metres length, the resonance of the 3 metres width is close to the resonance of 2.8 metres. It would resonate strongly here at 30 Hz, 56 Hz, 60 Hz and 120/112 Hz.

Phenomena of resonance frequencies:

• For example, a man with a deep voice speaks in a very small room (2 by 2 metres, 85 Hz). The voice appears to have more emphasis than in another room or out of doors. As soon as a woman speaks, the voice will sound just the same as in another room.

• The voice of a woman or that of a small child will cause glass to shatter. The voice strikes exactly the tone that corresponds to the resonant frequency of the glass. The glass resonates so strongly that it shatters (refer to the movie "The Tin Drum").

• A group of soldiers march across a bridge in cadence. The equal movement causes the bridge to vibrate so much that it collapses. That is why no one marches across bridges in cadence.
Where is the optimal place for the centre of my Lautsprecher Teufel Surround System in a 5.1/6.1/7.1 configuration?
Because the centre plays back spoken dialogue, this speaker must be positioned as centrally as possible under or over the TV/monitor or the screen.

If the centre is placed outside the area of 40 centimetres to 1.20 meter height, it should be slightly inclined or angled towards the listener.

Do I need the same cable length for all speakers?
In our experience, there is no acoustical difference for different cable lengths for lengths up to 15 metres.
The RAMPA insert at the bottom of the speaker sometimes is turned out with the tamping screw. What can I do about that?
Unscrew the tamping screw from the Rampa insert and screw the Rampa insert back into the bottom of the speaker.
