Highlights

Key advantages at a glance

"The Theater 1 outclasses the competition!"
AreaDVD.de 02/2006

There's always something new: before the Teufel Theater 1 Area DVD we've never had such an inexpensive system become our "Referenz"-system – but it is, because the Theater 1 hits the easily twice as expensive competition right where it hurts.

This proves that top performance doesn't have to go hand in hand with totally exhorbant pricing. The Berlin loudspeaker company demonstrates with the Theater 1 that it's easy to provide a sound performance with gorgeous optics, powerful levels and inexpensive pricing all in one boxset.

A large part of the sensational test success results comes from the fact that Teufel has not only developed a deeply solid yet technically simple set, but that a highly modern home cinema ensemble with a hefty active subwoofer is there that pleases with its fantastic bass definition – as well as atmosphere-enhancing dipoles and a conspicuous centre. It is, for some competitors, simply shameful how easily they’re outclassed by the Theater 1.

Here the competitors must certainly go through the inexpensive 5.1 sets scene, in the event that this market goes straight to the Berlin Teufel group.

As a whole, you can take the Theater 1 as a model for the modern loudspeaker system: times aren't better, people don't have a lot of extra money, and yet they could spring for the couple extra euros it would take to get a 5.1 set. And Teufel makes it happen for these customers – a box system that costs little, is modest and easy – and is a home run.

Whoever doesn't believe it we invite you to test it for yourself. We did and we’re certain: whoever objectively approaches a test with this set will be enthusiastic about the Theater 1.

The devilish result: with a madly progressive subwoofer and amazing dynamics, the Theater 1 simply outclasses the competition!

"The definition is breathtaking!"
www.media-planet.org 04/2008

The Theater 1 has once again passed with flying colours! The editor of the online magazine Media-Planet says the set has excellent sound characteristics, also on playback:

The initial interplay of "Set it off" from DJ P.U.D. works very well. At the latest, when the singer begins with her powerful voice, you can't stop your jaw from dropping to the floor. The subwoofer supported the sounds here perfectly.

But also in gaming when you hardly need it or it's not needed in the action (as the case often was in the "Apocripha") the loudspeakers create a complete and particularly full bass.

"Test Champion!"
Audiovison 12/2004

This set sits easily at the top of the test field. The first bars of the beautiful ballad by David Roth left no doubt that these low on discolouration loudspeakers were at work. The voices had full, warm groundnotes and were open and clear. The acoustic picture was also there, so much so that it appeared the singer was there, standing before the listening jury.

The multichannel playback played even better. The galloping steed with its black rider in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" demonstrated the threat to competitors. It was also great how the Teufel set built up the soundtrack of this film and how it gave the listeners the feeling of sitting right in the middle of the strife. Even at higher levels you never lost the sound, which is certainly a vote of confidence in the powerfully level drivers. With 31 Hz, the Teufel bass got top marks in terms of depth and the highest distortion-free maximum levels in the test.

So whoever wants to live with larger boxes in your sitting room, let us recommend to you the Theater 1.

"Out of all the pipes."
Stereoplay 10/2004

The Theater 1 from Teufel of 2004 has a long tradition and is, at 615 euro, still a very price conscious and available with six channels.

Normally, the manufacturers of inexpensive boxes try for a lighter tone through spectacular tuning. Not so with Teufel. The frequency range of the front loudspeakers seemed to be drawn with a ruler, such curves are also by often not seen, even by more expensive loudspeaker sets – respect to them. And the transfer curves from the centre, front and rear speakers were interchangeable and perfect. […]

The Theater 1 is – as Teufel is, as usual – going in the direction of a light sounding, seriously agile system. The film tones highly surprise and are celebrated: also in the wildest craziness on the screen such as the "Last Samurai" you had the overview as well as the hidden details every time.

With multichannel music as well the small set plays wonderfully free and open. The percussion staccato of the Blue Man Group hammers from the beginner's set with a precise emphasis in the listening room. The fine tone changes that the Blue-heads play through lengthening or shortening the percussion rolls came through realistically. […] The all-important speech intelligibility was entirely within the expectations of this price class.

Conclusion
An extremely price-conscious six-channel set with Dipole rear speakers and a compact subwoofer. It doesn't play too loud, but very open and direct. It's a top contender for film sounds, but is also great for listening to music.

It's our Price-hammer!

"An excellent loudspeaker system – Test Champion!"
Chip 12/2004

The Teufel Theater 1 skilfully powers up and impresses with a deep, hefty bass. Voices are clear and naturally played forward, and the orientation in the room is flawless. Demanding gamers will be happy, then ego shooters functions just simply bombastic.

True sound:

With these measurements we determine whether a whether a deep, midrange or high tone box is too loud or plays the bass too low. It further confirms our impressions from the listening test. The Teufel fiery home cinema combo demonstrates its commanding results gets results of 2,2 (front), 3,9 (centre) and 2,9 decibels (surround) in the grading box "True Sound" the total points.

Bass playback:

This home cinema dominates the "lower boundary frequencies" (bass playback). The Teufel Theater 1 can reach down to 30,5 Hz.

Conclusion:

Who has a large room of 16 m² and wants to use it as a cinema, can hardly ever afford a HiFi home cinemas. The Teufel Theater 1, our test champion, sounds so good that you have the feeling that you are a part of the action – and it doesn't matter whether music, film or Doom 3 is playing. It's a fantastic loudspeaker system with fine highs and strong bass. A drawback: the PC must have a surround receiver so you are able to enjoy this box set as it should be enjoyed.

"A heavenly offer."
Homevision 02/2007

The Theater 1 impressed us not only with its exemplary features - it also sounds astonishingly good. Even in stereo mode, the system responded with bell-like highs, cleanly detailed mids and earthy, resounding bass.

The subwoofer was never overpowering, nor did it begin to flag when subjected to remorseless sub-bass sequences that would bring many other speakers to their knees. Instead, the Theater 1 offered a well-defined frequency response and, compared to other systems, exceptional precision. Other speakers many times more expensive than these are not nearly as accurate.

Rating
• Dynamic, robust sound in stereo and surround modes
• Massive bass
• Exceptionally long guarantee period
• Rear speakers can also be used as dipole speakers

Far removed from the plastic, boxy sound of other speakers, the Theater 1 system offers outstanding hi-fi and surround quality at an excellent price.

Summary:
With the Theater 1, the only corners to be cut were in the price! In all other aspects, it’s the full monty here. The subwoofer is impressively powerful and voluminous, and the satellite speakers round out the frequency range with clean details and clear highs. The attractive design is the icing on the cake, making the system very impressive overall.

Theater 1 "Cinema 5.1" review of HiFi Test
"A luminous highlight."
HiFi Test 03/2004 and Design-Jahrbuch 2004

What is immediately noticeable with the Theater 1 combination is the lively style which gives the film performance the proper amount of realism. Much of this is contributed from the extremely vigorous subwoofer, because in hefty actions scenes with loud autos and impressive explosions it was never phased. Here the huge bass driver and the otherworldly, powerfully performing amplifiers impress with their weight.

The combination knows how to present excellent voice dialog as well as in the lesser effect-full dialog scenes. And thanks to the rear centre loudspeaker, the Theater 1 delivers a realistic and impressive room feeling with the perfect mix of diffuse width and precisely focused sound picture.

Should the happy owner want to play music instead of films, there's no problem, as the tones are very neutrally correct from both. To listen to music we used the DVD "Diana Krall live in Paris", which is a notably difficult CD.

The Canadian singer played a concert grand in an intimate jazz combo, and a symphony orchestra accompanied. It was quickly relayed by the playback [...]. Everything remains clearly separated and still plays homogenously together.

Conclusion: The Theater 1 combination has been totally renovated and has been put to the test. A shining highlight to which other beginner systems must measure themselves in the near future.

Very price conscious 6.1 combination with an excellent room-filling sound…for the class an amazingly powerful subwoofer.

Help regarding this product
Can I order the Teufel speakers in different colours than those offered?
To realise the very reasonable sales prices usual for Teufel, it is not possible to offer the speakers in a multitude of housing designs.

This circumstance would drive up the production and storage costs, which would result in a significantly more expensive sales price.

A paint shop in your vicinity will surely be able to repaint the speaker housing to your preferred colour without loss of warranty - after expiry of the eight-week right of return.
When can I use the rear speakers as direct speakers?
If you aren't able to position the speakers close to the wall as described above, you should use the them as direct speakers. For this purpose the rear switch should be tipped outwards. For use as direct speakers, the rear boxes should be set up to the left and right of the listening position - ideally at the same height, e.g. on a shelf or preferably on a base. If the speakers have to be set up so that they are much higher or lower, it may be advisable to align them to the listening point. For wall mounting it is best to use wall brackets that allow for vertical movement. When using the speakers in direct speaker mode, we recommend that the distance between the two rear speakers exceeds the listening position by 1m. But if you (have to) sit closer, please make sure that the front of the speaker is not pointing directly at you; instead, angle the speakers more into the room.
My subwoofer is humming. What can I do?
This hum can be caused by the connected devices or disruptions in your electricity current. Please do a test to see which it is.

1. Remove the RCA cable from the input on the subwoofer. If the hum is no longer heard, go to point B. Otherwise, follow point A.

A. Attach the net cable of the subwoofer to another electricity outlet (i.e. Kitchen/Bathroom/Bedroom). If the subwoofer still hums, get in contact with our Support team.

Should the hum no longer be there, the disruption was a problem in your power supply, which can, for instance, be caused by dimmers or chargers. To find out where the disruption is, unplug all your devices and work back from there. As soon as the hum is heard, you now know your source of the disruption.

B. In your case, the "ground hum" is responsible for the disruption. Please proceed as follows to discover your source.

  • Disconnect the cable or satellite port from the TV Receiver and check if the hum disappears or not. If it does, you can use a sheath current filter for the cable outlet to prevent this. For example, the sheath current filter AC 9022 ED. If you have a satellite connection, connect the Satellite Receiver to the optical cable playback source - Teufel Optical Digital Cable

  • If this reason can be excluded, separate all devices from the AV Receiver one at a time until the hum stops. The last connected device is then your hum source and should be separated from the others using a galvanic separation filter (found in a retail shop)

  • If this doesn't work, get in contact with us once again so that we can give an individual, helpful response.
Where is the optimal place for the centre of my Lautsprecher Teufel Surround System in a 5.1/6.1/7.1 configuration?
Because the centre plays back spoken dialogue, this speaker must be positioned as centrally as possible under or over the TV/monitor or the screen.

If the centre is placed outside the area of 40 centimetres to 1.20 meter height, it should be slightly inclined or angled towards the listener.

Could I also put a dipole such as the M 500 D on a base?
In theory, dipoles can be placed on bases providing they are always near a wall, but we cannot supply any bases that are of the recommended height of 1.50 metres. Stability at this height can only be guaranteed if the base plate is very big.

A base of around 1 x 1 metre isn't going to look very attractive. Perhaps your joiner will be able to make you something that will match your room. Otherwise you should also use direct speakers for the surround channels, preferably of the same model as the front speakers.
Is it possible to set up dipoles behind the listening location on the rear wall?
Yes. Alternatively, you can also use wall brackets to position the dipoles behind your seating location at a height of 1.40 to 2.10 metres. Almost all Teufel dipoles have an integrated M6 tamping screw in the bottom to accept wall brackets.

We recommend mounting the dipoles using the suitable, optionally available swivelling L wall bracket and then aligning the dipoles at a 45 degree angle slant to the inner lying speaker-equipped side to the back wall and aligning the other speaker-equipped side to the side wall. This causes the dipoles at the back and side walls to reflect, thus generating the desired diffusivity.
The distance of the dipole-side equipped speaker to the room side wall should be at least 10 centimetres.
Is it possible to set up dipoles on bases to the sides of the listening location?
A set-up close to the wall is possible in principle, but we cannot offer bases with the recommended height of at least 1.40 metres. Stability at this height can only be guaranteed if the base plate is very large.

However, a base of roughly 1 x 1 metres is certainly not a pleasant sight. Perhaps your joiner will be able to make something that matches your room.

Otherwise, you should use direct emitters for the surround channels as well - the same models as for the front speakers is best.
Why does the automatic calibration of my AV Receiver report "incorrect" polarity for the rear speakers even though my dipoles are connected with correct polarity?
The reason for the error message is that the calibration functions were primarily designed for direct-emitting speakers.

However, as soon as dipole speakers are utilised, error messages can occur due to the spatial playback, because the dipole concurrently emits both phasings - the correct one and "the wrong one".

The reason why one speaker is displayed as "correct" and the other one as "incorrect" polarity is because sound is reflected variably due to the spatial conditions and consequently arrives variably at the measurement microphone. Depending which proportion of the sound is recognised by the microphone first, the receiver then decides whether there is (an assumed) false polarity or not.

Because polarity is visible based on the pole clamp markings on the speakers, you may ignore the measurement of the receiver.
How do dipole speakers work?
Dipoles do not simply emit sound directly forwards, but emit towards the front and back in shifted phases.

This means that if you were sitting on an axis between the dipoles, the direct sound of the front and rear side of the dipoles is cancelled and you primarily hear the room reflections. This simulates the sound field of a cinema where the surround channels are played back by several speakers in each case. That is why the dipoles are mandatory for THX Ultra2 systems.
How do I position the dipoles for slanted walls in an attic storey?
The dipoles should be hung on the slanted wall/ceiling to the side of your listening location.

All Teufel speakers have an M6 tamping screw at the bottom of the housing to fasten the dipoles to a sturdy L-Lock bracket, available in the Teufel accessories programme.
What are the advantages of dipoles as compared with normal, direct-emitting speakers?
Only dipoles can transfer the atmosphere of the cinema sound par for par to a living room. The surround field for dipoles is broader and thus fills the entire rear area, whereas for direct emitters (normal speakers) you always hear the speakers directly. As direct emitters sound similar to the front systems, the atmosphere that creates three-dimensionality is missing as compared with the dipoles.

The disadvantages of dipoles is the necessity of positioning them on the wall (upwards of 1.40 metres) and the more expensive price: They usually cost more than normal direct emitters, as you require the double number of chassis to be used. For limits in price, the following general rule applies: better have good sounding direct emitters than bad dipoles.
Where is the optimal place for the dipoles?
The dipoles should be best mounted to the side of the listening location at a height of 1.40 to 2.10 metres. Many Teufel dipoles already have an integrated wall bracket. We offer the corresponding brackets for the other models, e.g. the L-Lock bracket.

The dipoles then emit towards the front (direction of TV/screen) and the back (direction of back wall) so that direct sound is not heard at the listening location. The distance of a dipole-side equipped speaker to the back wall should be at least 10 centimetres. If your living room does not permit the assembly in the described form, we will be happy to advise you.
Are THX dipole surround speakers also suitable to play back 5.1 channel sound formats?
Of course.

The dipole surround speakers simulate exactly the sound fields of the speakers installed at the rear and side walls of cinema theatres, providing an especially impressive surround experience.

As it is impossible to mount a similarly large amount of surround speakers in your living room at home, the THX dipole surround boxes are the best space-saving way to transfer the surround effects to the home cinema.
They provide a precise positioning of certain sound effects, yet immerse the listener in a room-filling surround atmosphere.

One never has the impression that the sound is being directly emitted from a speaker.
How do I set the switch on the dipole?
Dipole setting: The speakers operate in phase opposition, i.e. if one side is transient, the other side dies out.

Bipole setting: The speakers operate in phase, i.e. both sides die out on the same side.

Monopole setting: Only the front side of the dipole is activated, i.e. the speaker works as a direct emitter.

On current dipole models (e.g. t 130 D) the two positions of the switch for the dipole and direct radiator mode are not specifically marked. If the switch is set towards the wall, the dipole mode is on. If the switch is set towards the speaker cabinet, the direct emitter mode is on.
