The Theater 3 Hybrid is the newest addition to Teufel’s line of column speakers with integrated subwoofers. Similar to the extensively tested and proven Theater 4 Hybrid and Theater 5 Hybrid models, the newest member of Teufel’s speaker range is a 5.2 set with two active subwoofers integrated in the column speakers. It may seem like conventional surround sound at first, but given a closer look the Theater 3 Hybrid will blow you away!

Integrated side subwoofers
A pair of over waist high M 320 F column speakers form the heart of the new Theater 3 Hybrid. The thin and streamlined design of these speakers lies in stark contrast to the extremely powerful sound they are capable of delivering. The primary reason for this are the two subwoofers integrated in the sides of the columns. These subwoofers are not separated by a passive crossover as is typically the case, but are used to drive the 200 millimetre laterally positioned woofer chassis with their own 150 watt amplifiers.
Skip buying subwoofers
This method of active subwoofer integration has three main advantages. Number one: The receiver has less work to do. Number two: Space for a separate bass cube is no longer needed. Number three: The subwoofers do not cost anything extra because everything is already contained in the column speakers!
Twice the cone surface
The active subwoofers in the column speakers can be controlled through the sub-out output of the AV receiver using a Y adaptor or the speaker terminals of a stereo amplifier. This universal connection option means the column speakers can be used independently as high quality stereo speakers, which is why the two M 320 F speakers are also offered separately as a stereo speaker pair. The two subwoofer chassis of both hybrid columns provides you with twice the amount of cone surface that is standard for this class. More cone surface is still the most effective way of providing maximum airflow and hence maximum bass.
Fibreglass midbass driver
But bass isn't everything - other frequency ranges are also reproduced at a level of quality that is unrivalled in this price class. The optimally configured 25 mm cloth dome tweeter and 130 mm fibreglass midbass driver used in all of the speakers guarantee extremely harmonic surround sound reproduction!
Unobtrusive configuration
The horizontal M 320 C centre speaker can be placed below or above the TV screen while the compact M 320 R rear speakers can unobtrusively be positioned in the rear zone. Either wall-mounted or on stands.
Easy integration
This is the smallest set in the Hybrid speaker line, and with a comparable level of sound quality - but a somewhat lower volume range than the two larger sets - it is perfectly suitable for use in rooms up to 35 sqm. The set can easily be integrated into your home due to its smaller size.
Great bargain
Of course, the Theater 3 Hybrid also costs less than the Theater 4 Hybrid und Theater 5 Hybrid. For under 1000 euros, you get a top of the line column speaker surround sound set with two active subwoofers. Only from Teufel.

Hybrid Speaker M 320 F
Hybrid Speaker M 320 F
The slender M 320 F may look like a conventional column speaker, but it offers so much more. An active/passive hybrid design with an integrated subwoofer amplifier, this compact column speaker functions as both an active subwoofer and a passive stereo speaker at the same time.

The 130 mm fibreglass woofer and 25 mm neodymium tweeter are responsible for the stereo sound. With the help of a side-mounted 200 mm subwoofer, the M 320 F has a full-range frequency response with powerful sub-bass.

The remarkable bass response of this speaker is made possible by a separate 150 W amplifier intended solely for the subwoofer channel. The tweeter/mid-range driver module is passively decoupled for frequencies above 120 Hz. An acoustic partition in the cabinet prevents the drivers from interfering with each other.

By using two of these column speakers, Theater 3 Hybrid owners benefit from having two subwoofers in one system.

The universal design of the integrated active subwoofer allows it to be connected to the ‘Sub Out’ of your AV receiver or the speaker terminals of your stereo amplifier. In any case, this relieves your amplifier/receiver from bass duties and frees it up to concentrate more on the other frequency ranges. With a pair of M 320 F speakers, you will dramatically improve the quality of the bass response in your stereo system.

These two column speakers provide Theater 3 Hybrid owners with the advantage of having two subwoofers in one system. A three-stage volume selector switch allows you to select how much bass is split between the subwoofer and tweeter/mid-range drivers and thus match the system to your listening environment.

Theater 3 Hybrid "5.2-Set" review of What HiFi
"A unique speaker system that has plenty going for it."
What HiFi 08/2009

This complete home cinema speaker package gives you more box for your buck (thanks to the full complement of surround speakers) but for less money. Admittedly, this is just a speaker system rather than an all-in-one, but it's still an impressively modest price tag for what you're getting.

Chunky fronts come packing subs
And this is no ordinary 5.1 system. The Teufel Theatre 3 Hybrid offers a centre channel and two rear speakers alongside two floorstanding front speakers that come packing integrated active subwoofers – making a 5.2 system of sorts.

If by some rather large oversight you had managed not to notice the make-up of this system, rest assured the penny will drop when you lift up the front speakers: standing 94cms tall, the Teufel M320F floorstanders weigh in at a very hefty 18.5kg, incorporating as they do a 150 Watt amplifier to drive that 20cm sub.

The rear and centre channels follow more traditional lines, and the system as a whole looks smart and nicely finished – as we've said, it's a lot of kit for the cash.

Detailed, fast and cohesive sound
Given a few days to run in, the Teufel produces a detailed, fast and cohesive sound. Watching the Blu-ray of Iron Man, special effects sound crisp and open, while the centre channel delivers clear dialogue. [...]

The Teufel Theatre 3 Hybrid is a substantial and stylish system with enough speed, cohesion and excitement to warrant consideration.

• Speakers carry their bulk well
• Integrated sub design is neat
• Fast and cohesive
• Good insight

Great for your ears... and your wallet!
Area DVD 06/2009

The Theater 3 almost completely overwhelms with a natural tone, room space, precise bass, punctilious high ranges and stability levels. Total overall score for sound in relation to the price class – perfect.

Overall conclusion
No one should wonder why Teufel has such a prominent position in the German loudspeaker market after listening to the Theater 3.5.2 Hybrid system. Such a natural tone, large and small, precise dynamics absolutely spot on, enormous stability levels and commanding sound…there's so little that's critical to say.

Your ear and your wallet can be thrilled, because for your money you get a complete full sound ensemble which doesn't shrink to render complex music playback – rather, it successfully lets it loose without difficulty. Thanks to a dynamic surround sound connection and the strong but never artificially overplayed bass tones, your film enjoyment is also an exceptional experience.

The practical equipment is a joy as well. Thanks to its compact size, then Theater 3 can also easily be situated and installed in smaller sitting rooms.

• Large as well as fine dynamics astounding for this price class
• Natural tonality
• Clear and astounding multi-faceted high ranges
• Assertive, sound and accurate bass playback
• Wonderful connections of the mid-range areas
• High stability levels
• Exceptionally affordable price

A first class 5.2 loudspeaker set with low space requirements!

"Price / Performance ratio 10 / 10 stars plus an extra star for outstanding quality at a very affordable price."

"The excellent craftsmanship of the Theater 3 Hybrid is just as impressive as its top-notch sound. It's difficult to imagine another system offering this much performance with a size this compact and a price tag this low. Most of all, it’s the intense, distortion-free bass at high SPLs and the nuanced details that leave us astounded."

"Convincing" – VIDEO Recommendation."
Video 04/2008

The Theater 3 Hybrid is indisputably an impressive product launch from Teufel. In the 2.2 scenario, this technically sophisticated system makes music listening a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Add to that the centre and rear speakers and you get a fully cinematic home theatre system that can soar to the highest levels (neighbours permitting!) – without ever neglecting the quieter moments. Of course we don’t want to go overboard with our praise, but this certainly is a system that will provide ongoing listening pleasure. And it's available for a very fair price.

Help regarding this product
Can I set up the set in a different way to that described?
The recommended set-up information below represents the best possible arrangement for perfect multichannel playback in your home. Your available space, your partner or your furniture may not always allow you to arrange the speakers in the ideal manner. Try to meet as many of the requirements as possible.

Modern AV Receivers offer numerous options for compensating electronically for any compromises in the set up. Generally speaking, the following rule always applies: you can always use our recommendations as a basis for experimenting with what works best for you, acoustically and optically. Let your ears (and eyes) decide!
Can the 5.2 set be expanded into a 7.2 set?
Yes. You can expand the pre-configured 5.2 set into a 7.2 set with two separate satellites using an EX expansion set, now or later.

The 5.2 channel set plays back all 5.1 sound tracks on DVDs and provides an excellent home cinema experience. With the new 7.1 sound format, a rear centre channel is also generated in addition to these channels and distributed to two additional speakers (the "rear centre"). This channel, which is encoded in the stereo effects channels, allows better location of effects and music signals directly behind the sitting position.

If you use two speakers for the rear centre channel (i.e. installed 7.1/7.2 set), the optimum sitting position is not restricted to one specific place, so you don't have to be sitting exactly in the middle and several listeners can enjoy the best sound.

A 7.1 or 7.2 combination is also suitable if your AV receiver / amplifier has corresponding connection options, i.e. two additional power amplifiers for two rear centre speakers.
They can be recognised easily by the output information (e.g. 7 x 100 watts). Two more rear centres are used (7.1 technology) in addition to the rear speakers that are already present for right and left (5.1 technology).
What is the best way to set up my Theater Hybrid in 5.2 configuration?
There are some configuration criteria for home cinema systems that need to be observed in order to create the ideal sound with the Teufel speaker set. For home theatre systems, we recommend concentrating on the area actually used – i.e. the (part of the) room where the TV/screen and seats are located. It is useful to position the TV/screen as centrally as possible, from the perspective of the listening point.

Because the centre plays back actors' dialogue, the speaker must be positioned as centrally as possible under or over the TV and inclined or angled towards the listener. For horizontal and vertical attachment you will need an additional wall bracket. An M6 tamping screw has been integrated into the base for attaching the Teufel wall brackets. This tamping screw is for attaching optional bases. Using bases automatically guarantees optimum playback height for the centre.

The front columns are placed at equal distances to the right and left of the TV in old stereo fashion (distance to listener = distance between the left and right speaker).

The bass speakers at the sides have to point in (to the centre of the room) or out (to the room walls). If the bass speakers are emitting sound towards the wall, increased bass volume can be expected. Feel free to experiment and find the ratio that works best for you. You should also consider the position of the rear volume control (see above).

In the concert set with direct speakers, the rear speakers are best placed at the sides and slightly offset towards the back (preferably by 20 degrees). Either at the same height (preferably on a base) or higher, up to 2.10 metres from the underside of the box.

For direct speakers, we recommend that the distance between the rear speakers and the listening point is more than 1 m. But if you (have to) sit closer, please make sure that the front of the rear speaker is not pointing directly at you; instead, angle the speakers more into the room, towards the TV or towards the wall. Or create a greater distance by hanging the speaker higher.
Why is the Theater Hybrid a 5.2 set?
The number after the dot refers to the number of subwoofers used.

A 5.1 set uses one subwoofer, the Theater set has two active subwoofers, so it's a 5.2 set. The 5.2 set reproduces all of the 5.1 sound tracks on all DVDs, only the LFE ("low frequency effects") channel is played over not just one, but two subwoofers.
Which is the right AV Receiver?
The Theater Hybrid can be successfully combined with a number of AV Receivers. Our homepage features a number of up-to-date AV receivers recommended for use with the Theater.

When making your decision you should also consider later models, earlier models and appliances made by other manufacturers that meet the same technological requirements.
How do I correctly equalise the two subwoofers?
We recommend turning up the volume level controls all the way on both subwoofers. Listen to a piece of music you are familiar with that has intensive basses.

Alternatively, you can also use the test sound of the receiver/amplifier. Now ask a second person to lower and raise the volume of the one subwoofer and then that of the other subwoofer. As a small aid, you can disconnect the normal speakers so that only the subwoofers are running. Both subwoofers are correctly adjusted when you have the feeling that both are equally loud.
What are the advantages of connecting a second subwoofer?
An additional subwoofer provides the following advantages:

1. The second membrane surface distinctly increases the sound pressure.

2. When using an additional identical subwoofer, the following also applies:

From a purely technical view the performance is doubled, yet the level only increases metrologically by roughly 6 dB which corresponds to a doubling but which the human ear cannot truly perceive. The sound is louder, but is not perceived as twice as loud.

3. In some rooms, the room acoustics can be significantly improved by a second subwoofer. Every room has a room resonance frequency that is additionally amplified by the room due to the frequency emitted by the speaker - the result is often droning or reverberant basses. A second subwoofer can accurately counteract this frequency; the result is a dryer bass.
Which speaker cables does Teufel recommend?
For smaller sets up to Theater 1, we recommend using the 2.5 mm² Teufel speaker cable for optimal sound quality if the required length does not exceed 15 metres.

For Theater 2 and larger systems, we recommend the Teufel cable with 4 mm² cross-section for the front/centre speakers, and the 2.5 mm² cable up to a length of 15 metres for the effect speakers.

Choose a higher cross-section for even greater lengths.
Can I order the Teufel speakers in different colours than those offered?
To realise the very reasonable sales prices usual for Teufel, it is not possible to offer the speakers in a multitude of housing designs.

This circumstance would drive up the production and storage costs, which would result in a significantly more expensive sales price.

A paint shop in your vicinity will surely be able to repaint the speaker housing to your preferred colour without loss of warranty - after expiry of the eight-week right of return.
Which cables do I need to connect a Teufel speaker set to the AV Receiver?
A home cinema system needs speaker cables to connect the satellite speakers to the receivers, and an NF mono RCA cable to connect the active subwoofer to the sub out socket of the AV Receiver.
Is it possible to combine speaker cables with different cross-sections?
To supplement missing cable lengths you can use speaker cables of differing thicknesses without acoustical differences - provided there are no extreme differences in the cross-sections.
Should I rather choose a fully active or a partially active speaker set?
It is compulsory to connect partially active systems to an AV Receiver. This supplies the five to seven satellite speakers with the necessary power. Only the subwoofer works additionally with its own amplifier. The investment in a new system is higher because of the AV Receiver, but the solution is also much more flexible. After all, you can connect several signal sources, such as a TV, satellite receiver, PC, game console and MP3 player to an AV Receiver at the same time.

Fully active set do not necessarily need an AV Receiver. The five to seven satellite speakers here are supplied with power by the amplifiers which are installed in the subwoofer in addition to the subwoofer power amplifier. This saves you the costs of a receiver, but it is usually only possible to connect one source to our fully active subwoofer.

Exceptions here are the Concept E2, the Concept E Magnum Digital, the Motiv 5 Digital, the Concept F, the LT2+R and the Concept S+R.

Naturally you can also equip the fully active systems with an AV Receiver at a later point. The connection is then equal to the partially active sets.
What are the volume switches for?
The sound of the speaker always depends on the room where it is located.

The volume of the active subwoofer can be controlled so that you can adapt the relationship between the active bass and treble / mid tones to suit the room.

Use your own senses to judge which settings sound best in your room. This switch is especially useful in stereo mode. On the other hand, multichannel amplifiers often have technologies that adjust the subwoofer volume - so when using a multichannel amplifier the controller should first be set at 0dB.
Do I need the same cable length for all speakers?
In our experience, there is no acoustical difference for different cable lengths for lengths up to 15 metres.
The RAMPA insert at the bottom of the speaker sometimes is turned out with the tamping screw. What can I do about that?
Unscrew the tamping screw from the Rampa insert and screw the Rampa insert back into the bottom of the speaker.
