Highlights

Key advantages at a glance
  • Home cinema set with partially-active floor speakers for loud volumes
  • 2 integrated subwoofers (190 watt RMS each) with 300 mm bass drivers
  • 1 horizontal center speaker with dual mid-range drivers
  • 2 identically-configured rear loudspeakers
  • Works with any AV receiver
  • Recommended for spaces up to 70 sqm.

With its active/passive M 520 F floorstanding speakers, this set is not a compact design but rather an ensemble of speakers that also actually look like loudspeakers. It is designed for people who want to prominently display their speakers in the living room rather than try to hide them. Once installed, Theater 5 owners will be rewarded with a sound quality whose impact, liveliness and emotion will vanquish all other contenders in this price category. Without mercy.

Back to the roots
Releasing the Theater 5 Hybrid and its central M 520 F floorstanding speaker is a return to roots for Lautsprecher Teufel: large floorstanding speakers with an awe-inspiring design in the tradition of classics such as the LT 55 or LT 66.

D’Appolito configuration
This set does not however signal a departure from Teufel’s current philosophy of combined subwoofer/satellite speakers. The M 520 F is actually both: floorstanding speaker AND subwoofer/satellite combination. The 1.15 meter high column with 25 mm cloth dome tweeter and two 160 mm fibreglass midbass drivers in a D’Appolito configuration houses an active subwoofer with a 190 watt amplifier driving a laterally-positioned 300 millimetre large bass chassis.

Space saver
With the Theater 5 Hybrid you basically get two active subwoofers for the price of none! Meaning free. And you don’t have to make space for a separate bass cube because everything is already contained in the columns!

Fantastic as a stereo set
The active subwoofers in the floorstanding speakers can be controlled by the sub-out output of the AV receivers using a Y adaptor or the speaker terminals of a stereo amplifier. Because they are available in pairs, the M 520 F can be used as a fantastic Stereo Set.

Twice the diaphragm surface
The two subwoofer chassis of both hybrid floorstanding speakers features twice the amount of diaphragm surface that is standard for this class. And a larger diaphragm surface is still the most effective way of providing maximum airflow and hence maximum bass.

Identical front row speakers
In the 5.2 concert set, the M 520 F is supported by the M 520 C centre speaker equipped with the same tweeter and midbass chassis – which follows the Teufel philosophy of identical configuration in the front speaker row. The result is unbelievably harmonious sound quality from the entire front row, which can also be attributed to the wide sound directivity characteristics of the centre and column speakers.

Full sound range
The rear zone of the system is supplemented by two M 520 R rear speakers which also feature the same chassis configuration. In combination with the Front row these speakers produce an incredibly balanced and full-ranged sound that can fill rooms of up to 70 sqm.

Breathtaking multi-channel sound
The entire set offers a stage of such lively sound that listening to multi-channel music DVDs can be literally breathtaking. This doesn’t mean the set is lacking in terms of home cinema playback. On the contrary!   Emotional and physical effects The Theater 5 Hybrid provides clear proof that the easiest way to get the best results is to rely on “classical” methods: increased housing volume, large diaphragm surface, solid chassis technology, proven D’Apollito configuration plus a great deal of “inspiration” (see active subwoofer in the front speaker). This is the only method that results in the Theater 5 Hybrid’s outstanding sound quality. Sound that can affect you both emotionally as well as physically. ?

Specifications

Hybrid Speaker M 520 F
Hybrid Speaker M 520 F
Here is a speaker that is never shy and reserved – to the contrary, it has an explosive dynamic range that begs to be cranked up. Weighing in at 35 kg, the M 520 F is 1.15 m high and 0.5 m deep, thus having an immense capacity in terms of mass and volume. This capacity is put to optimal use thanks to the precise and inspired engineering from Teufel.

This floorstanding speaker contains two 2 x 160 mm carbon fibre woofers, a 25 mm neodymium tweeter and a side-firing 300 mm woofer. In this configuration, the front panel can be conveniently narrow even though the speaker has monumental bass response. The integrated bass driver functions purely as a subwoofer coupled at 80 Hz and driven by a separate 190 W amplifier. The universal connectors on the rear terminal allow the integrated active subwoofer to be connected to either the ‘Sub Out’ of an AV receiver or the speaker terminals of your stereo amplifier. In any case, this relieves your amplifier/receiver from bass duties and frees it up to concentrate more on the other frequency ranges.

Using the M 520 F, you will dramatically improve the bass response of your stereo system. In home theatre environments, you will effectively add two subwoofers to your system. A three-stage volume selector switch allows you to select how much bass is split between the subwoofer and tweeter/mid-range drivers and thus match the system to your listening environment. This active/passive construction is effective all the way down to 30 Hz and can generate breathtaking sound pressure levels as high as 105 dB/m!

Pair Rear Speaker M 520 R
The M 520 R rounds out the Theater 5 system. This compact speaker handles the rear channels in a 5.1 surround system and adds a spatial quality to the sound field while maintaining precise definition of all rear channel signals.

By using the same drivers as the three front speakers – 160 mm carbon fibre woofer and 25 mm fabric dome tweeter – the surround sound of this system is highly balanced. The high maximum power rating of 140 W makes it safe to use even at high listening levels.

The connector panel conforms to CE standards and ensures that cables remain firmly fastened. The removable front grille allows you to choose between the ‘living room friendly’ and ‘hi-tech’ appearances.

Centre Speaker M 520 C
The M 520 C centre channel speaker is the perfect match for the M 520 F hybrid column speakers. The two 2 x 160 mm carbon fibre woofers with a metal phase plug and single 25 mm neodymium dome tweeter make this speaker identical to the front column speakers – with the exception of the subwoofer, which would be superfluous here.

This horizontal speaker is based on the THX standard and utilises a D’Appolito configuration for excellent sound dispersion so that speech remains highly intelligible even outside of the optimum listening position. With a high maximum power rating of 190 W, this centre channel speaker can also be used in larger rooms. You can always expect the sound quality to be clean and clear.

Theater 5 Hybrid "Concert 5.2" review of HDTV Praxis
"More than just the sum of its individual parts."
HDTV Praxis 03/2008

"The Teufel M 520 F features the same combination of midrange drivers and tweeters as the M 520 C centre speaker and the M 520 R rear speakers. Here, the drivers are housed in a smaller enclosure, with the active subwoofer occupying the remainder of the tall column. So is this just a simple structural hybrid of two separate units? Yes, and yet the result is much better than just the sum of its individual parts."

"The real deal!"
Heimkino & HiFi Test 02/2007

Conclusion
We're thrilled! There is so much more to the Theater 5 than its elegant looks would lead you to believe. You'd expect a fair bit of power from a 1.15-metre column speaker anyway, but this system is the real deal! You'll be hard pressed to find such a high level of power and sub-bass paired with pristine sound in this price category, because the Theater 5 only costs €1,500! Quite unbelievable. Teufel is offering for this price a complete surround sound system with two active subwoofers that will blend in nicely in any living room.

"Full bass, excellent mid-ranges and clear listening."
AV Magazin.de 11/2008

The test subject sent over from Teufel played from the beginning with good detail and finely harmonised dynamics. An imposing orchestra played in all voices equally well. Even if it's lacking in higher frequency spectrums here and there, the M520 F makes up for it with its cleanly graduated representation.

Thundering drums and spirited strings play equally with expressive character. The acoustic underpinnings of the subwoofer to the included Satellites work fantastically, with the high, mid- and low ranges flowing together. Large and heavy bass drivers present themselves with the M 520 F with an acceptable group delay. The bass range is seamlessly implemented in the sound and plays together hand in hand with the agile but light midrange drivers. (Which can’t be taken for granted, especially with a standing loudspeaker of this price class.)

To bring the broad bass drivers out of the shadows, we placed some demanding classical music into the player. The Hip Hop CD "Tarantula" (from US rapper Mystical) and the album "Shock Value" (from Timbaland) really bring out the deep, powerful bass.

The dynamically compressed but still well co-ordinated baselines and kick drums are blasted unfiltered and powerfully into the listening area. Through the large hub capacity of the boxes are out there every time and fully heard – by you. With an almost unreasonable nonchalance, the two stand loudspeakers throw it out into the test room. And that makes us very happy. The M 520 F is a solid loudspeaker, that, very simply, makes it fun again – and that in the classical stereo area as well as the multi-channel setup. Full bass, neutral mid-ranges and clear listening – a powerful construction.

In plain words
The Berlin music-smithy can always be counted on for a real surprise. With the M 250 F Teufel offers an acoustic goodie at a seductive price. The symbiosis between the active and non-active technology works out devastatingly good. The thin stand boxes sound commanding, thanks to the included subwoofer, are cleanly made and please the eye with their contours. Measured against its price, the play is unequalled in its price class.

• Sound: Excellent
• Equipment: Excellent
• Workmanship: Very good – Excellent
• Class: Luxury class
• Price/Performance: Excellent

Total Result: EXCELLENT

Help regarding this product
Can I set up the set in a different way to that described?
The recommended set-up information below represents the best possible arrangement for perfect multichannel playback in your home. Your available space, your partner or your furniture may not always allow you to arrange the speakers in the ideal manner. Try to meet as many of the requirements as possible.

Modern AV Receivers offer numerous options for compensating electronically for any compromises in the set up. Generally speaking, the following rule always applies: you can always use our recommendations as a basis for experimenting with what works best for you, acoustically and optically. Let your ears (and eyes) decide!
Why is the Theater Hybrid a 5.2 set?
The number after the dot refers to the number of subwoofers used.

A 5.1 set uses one subwoofer, the Theater set has two active subwoofers, so it's a 5.2 set. The 5.2 set reproduces all of the 5.1 sound tracks on all DVDs, only the LFE ("low frequency effects") channel is played over not just one, but two subwoofers.
Can I order the Teufel speakers in different colours than those offered?
To realise the very reasonable sales prices usual for Teufel, it is not possible to offer the speakers in a multitude of housing designs.

This circumstance would drive up the production and storage costs, which would result in a significantly more expensive sales price.

A paint shop in your vicinity will surely be able to repaint the speaker housing to your preferred colour without loss of warranty - after expiry of the eight-week right of return.
Which cables do I need to connect a Teufel speaker set to the AV Receiver?
A home cinema system needs speaker cables to connect the satellite speakers to the receivers, and an NF mono RCA cable to connect the active subwoofer to the sub out socket of the AV Receiver.
Which speaker cables does Teufel recommend?
For smaller sets up to Theater 1, we recommend using the 2.5 mm² Teufel speaker cable for optimal sound quality if the required length does not exceed 15 metres.

For Theater 2 and larger systems, we recommend the Teufel cable with 4 mm² cross-section for the front/centre speakers, and the 2.5 mm² cable up to a length of 15 metres for the effect speakers.

Choose a higher cross-section for even greater lengths.
Is it possible to combine speaker cables with different cross-sections?
To supplement missing cable lengths you can use speaker cables of differing thicknesses without acoustical differences - provided there are no extreme differences in the cross-sections.
Should I rather choose a fully active or a partially active speaker set?
It is compulsory to connect partially active systems to an AV Receiver. This supplies the five to seven satellite speakers with the necessary power. Only the subwoofer works additionally with its own amplifier. The investment in a new system is higher because of the AV Receiver, but the solution is also much more flexible. After all, you can connect several signal sources, such as a TV, satellite receiver, PC, game console and MP3 player to an AV Receiver at the same time.

Fully active set do not necessarily need an AV Receiver. The five to seven satellite speakers here are supplied with power by the amplifiers which are installed in the subwoofer in addition to the subwoofer power amplifier. This saves you the costs of a receiver, but it is usually only possible to connect one source to our fully active subwoofer.

Exceptions here are the Concept E2, the Concept E Magnum Digital, the Motiv 5 Digital, the Concept F, the LT2+R and the Concept S+R.

Naturally you can also equip the fully active systems with an AV Receiver at a later point. The connection is then equal to the partially active sets.
What are the volume switches for?
The sound of the speaker always depends on the room where it is located.

The volume of the active subwoofer can be controlled so that you can adapt the relationship between the active bass and treble / mid tones to suit the room.

Use your own senses to judge which settings sound best in your room. This switch is especially useful in stereo mode. On the other hand, multichannel amplifiers often have technologies that adjust the subwoofer volume - so when using a multichannel amplifier the controller should first be set at 0dB.
How do I connect the hybrid speakers to my AV Receiver?
The hybrid boxes are treated just like two normal active subwoofers. You will need a Y adapter that doubles the sub out output of an AV Receiver. Each one of these now two outputs are connected to one column speaker with one mono RCA cable each. At the back of the column you will find a corresponding "Line In" input in cinch format.

You will also find the "Line" switch at the back which ensures the optimal filtering and polarity of the subwoofer.
How do I connect the M 320/ M 420 F/ M 520 F hybrid speakers to my stereo amplifier?
The M 320/ M 420 F/ M 520 F hybrid speakers are treated like two normal passive stereo speakers and connected to the speaker outputs of the amplifier with two-pole speaker cables. At the back of the column you will find a corresponding "High Level" input.

The "High Level" switch also located at the back ensures the optimal filtering and polarity of the subwoofer.
Is the M 320 F/ M 420 F/ M 520 F from the Theater 3 Hybrid home cinema set suitable for hi-fi?
In every way.

Teufel does not artificially differentiate between home cinema and music playback. The objective of the speaker is to consistently achieve the original playback quality created by the sound engineer in the studio. As such, it is a fully adequate replacement for your old stereo system. After all, Lautsprecher Teufel is a pioneer in the sector of high-quality satellite - subwoofer combinations.

Even if the M 320 F/ M 420 F/ M 520 F look like standing speakers - technically they are a subwoofer/satellite combination.
Doesn't the M 320 F "break" with the Teufel philosophy of satellites and subwoofer combinations?
Not at all.

The column is nothing other than a closed two-way satellite (the centre speaker) set vertically on a narrow active subwoofer and combined in one collective housing (but separated acoustically). As such, it is a partially active subwoofer/satellite combination in the guise of a conventional passive standing speaker.

Do I need the same cable length for all speakers?
In our experience, there is no acoustical difference for different cable lengths for lengths up to 15 metres.
The RAMPA insert at the bottom of the speaker sometimes is turned out with the tamping screw. What can I do about that?
Unscrew the tamping screw from the Rampa insert and screw the Rampa insert back into the bottom of the speaker.
