The perfect A/V receiver for use with Teufel’s active subwoofers

The DecoderStation 6 is less than half the size of a standard A/V receiver. Together with Teufel’s 5.1 multichannel active subwoofers (such as the US 2110/6, US 4110/6, US 8112/8), the DecoderStation 6 creates a complete home cinema system. The division of labor is as followings: The DecoderStation contains the preamplifier while the active subwoofer houses the amplifier. Everything is connected via 3 stereo RCA cables. 

The DecoderStation 6 decodes DTS and Dolby Digital and includes decoders for Dolby Pro Logic II making it well equipped for any incoming sound formats whether from televisions, Blu-ray players or game consoles. No additional A/V receivers or amplifiers are required.

Even better: HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) allows you to connect your television and Blu-Ray player to the DecoderStatoin with a single HDMI cable. Video from the Blu-ray player is passed along to the television and audio from television programs is delivered to the DecoderStation via the HDMI cable’s Audio Return Channel.

This makes it unnecessary to run an additional audio cable from the television.

In addition, the DecoderStation 6 comes with an integrated module for transmitting the subwoofer signal. If your subwoofer is equipped with Teufel’s Subwoofer Wireless Receiver, you’ll be able to operate it wirelessly.

Thanks to HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), it’s possible to regulate volume levels on the DecoderStation 6 using a standard television remote. The remote that comes with the DecoderStation is therefore only required for the initial setup.

Thanks to Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX codec, music is played back wirelessly in near CD quality. Any music stored on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or tablet can be easily playback by your system when connected to the DecoderStation 6. In addition, music from apps like Spotify, YouTube or iTunes can be streamed via Bluetooth for a never-ending supply of new tunes.

The DecoderStation’s innovative construction includes a cooling system that doesn’t use fans. This not only allows the system to be incredibly small – it makes it noise free.

Double bass

Low frequencies are handled by two parallel 165 mm fibreglass/cellulose drivers. Over one meter tall, each tower features a 3-way speaker system. Above two 165 mm bass woofers is a 165 mm Kevlar/fiberglass midrange driver in a separate resonating chamber. My Bluetooth speaker produces a lesser quality sound with my Windows PC or laptop.
It could be that the speaker is connected as a device with speakerphone function. Please go to: settings menu > devices and printer > BOOMSTER (or other Bluetooth device). Right click on the device and remove the check mark next to the “speakerphone” option.
Can I order the Teufel speakers in different colours than those offered?
To realise the very reasonable sales prices usual for Teufel, it is not possible to offer the speakers in a multitude of housing designs.

This circumstance would drive up the production and storage costs, which would result in a significantly more expensive sales price.

A paint shop in your vicinity will surely be able to repaint the speaker housing to your preferred colour without loss of warranty - after expiry of the eight-week right of return.
Which cables do I need to connect a Teufel speaker set to the AV Receiver?
A home cinema system needs speaker cables to connect the satellite speakers to the receivers, and an NF mono RCA cable to connect the active subwoofer to the sub out socket of the AV Receiver.
When can I use the rear speakers as direct speakers?
If you aren't able to position the speakers close to the wall as described above, you should use the them as direct speakers. For this purpose the rear switch should be tipped outwards. For use as direct speakers, the rear boxes should be set up to the left and right of the listening position - ideally at the same height, e.g. on a shelf or preferably on a base. If the speakers have to be set up so that they are much higher or lower, it may be advisable to align them to the listening point. For wall mounting it is best to use wall brackets that allow for vertical movement. When using the speakers in direct speaker mode, we recommend that the distance between the two rear speakers exceeds the listening position by 1m. But if you (have to) sit closer, please make sure that the front of the speaker is not pointing directly at you; instead, angle the speakers more into the room.

What is the advantage of bi-amping/bi-wiring?
Bi-amping means that the speaker can be operated by two amplifiers at the same time, or by a bi-amping-capable AV receiver. This enables the different chassis (for the treble mid-tone and bass range) to be individually supplied with one signal. Among other things, this could increase the sound performance of a speaker.

Bi-wiring states that the corresponding speaker can be controlled at the same time with two different speaker cables, meaning via separated input sockets for the treble and mid-tone range on one hand, and for the bass range of the frequency switch on the other. This could improve the sound even more. Bi-wiring is the prerequisite for bi-amping.
My subwoofer is humming. What can I do?
This hum can be caused by the connected devices or disruptions in your electricity current. Please do a test to see which it is.

1. Remove the RCA cable from the input on the subwoofer. If the hum is no longer heard, go to point B. Otherwise, follow point A.

A. Attach the net cable of the subwoofer to another electricity outlet (i.e. Kitchen/Bathroom/Bedroom). If the subwoofer still hums, get in contact with our Support team.

Should the hum no longer be there, the disruption was a problem in your power supply, which can, for instance, be caused by dimmers or chargers. To find out where the disruption is, unplug all your devices and work back from there. As soon as the hum is heard, you now know your source of the disruption.

B. In your case, the "ground hum" is responsible for the disruption. Please proceed as follows to discover your source.

  • Disconnect the cable or satellite port from the TV Receiver and check if the hum disappears or not. If it does, you can use a sheath current filter for the cable outlet to prevent this. For example, the sheath current filter AC 9022 ED. If you have a satellite connection, connect the Satellite Receiver to the optical cable playback source - Teufel Optical Digital Cable

  • If this reason can be excluded, separate all devices from the AV Receiver one at a time until the hum stops. The last connected device is then your hum source and should be separated from the others using a galvanic separation filter (found in a retail shop)

  • If this doesn't work, get in contact with us once again so that we can give an individual, helpful response.
How do I connect my fully active Teufel system to a multi-channel sound card?
If your sound card is set up for 5.1 operation, you will usually find three 3.5 mm mini jack outputs. Connect the card using three Y adapter cables in the 3.5 mm mini jacks to 2 x cinch formats to the inputs for the front R/L, rear R/L, centre and subwoofer at the rear of the fully active Teufel set.

The colours of the outputs and the types of signals transferred at each output differ from sound card to sound card. Please refer to the sound card manual. The Teufel system then reproduces the surround signal decoded by the sound card.

The five satellites are connected directly to the speaker clamps on the subwoofer, using the speaker cable supplied. Strip and split the ends of the speaker cable to do so. Speakers and amplifiers have corresponding [+] and [−] clamps. The [+] cable of the speaker cable is marked with a stripe. It is important to observe the correct polarity when connecting the speakers: the plus pole of the speaker connects to the plus pole of the amplifier and the minus pole of the speaker to the minus pole of the amplifier.
The subwoofer switches itself off after a long period at high volume (the satellites keep playing).
It is possible that you have operated the system outside of its performance boundaries.

The system is an extremely good-value, fully active system that performs very well for its class. It has been designed for home cinema use in smaller rooms and for PC use. It should be taken into consideration, especially in fully active operation with sound cards and DVD players, that a PC speaker system cannot fill an entire room with sound, only the area where the user is sitting. This system has not been designed for and is not suitable for long-term use at very high volumes.

If the system is operated when the volume is too high, the safety cut-off in the power pack may be activated. This cut-off switch is required for safety reasons and prevents the power pack, the power amplifiers and the speakers from sustaining damage. If this cut-off switch is activated, it means that the system has reached its performance boundaries.

Our problem-solving tips:

• Position the system speakers closer to where you are sitting. Then much less power will be needed for loud sound reproduction.

• Use an AV Receiver that will supply the satellites with power. This takes the pressure off the power pack and the power amplifiers of the system.

However, a fault cannot be ruled out if the system switches off at low volumes in rooms of 20 m² or smaller.

We are unable to authorise additional active cooling of the power amplifier. It no longer corresponds to the specifications for the operation of our products. Failures caused by additional active cooling can clearly be attributed to negligent action by the user. As operation with active cooling has a direct effect on the function of the product, it voids all warranty claims.
One satellite speaker generates no sound or distorted sound, but the other one works fine. Why?
In order to more precisely identify the problem, please try swapping the channel positions of the two satellite speakers. It should be possible to find out if the problem is a defective satellite speaker, or if it has to do with the electronics of the amplifier. If the satellite speaker functions after the swap, then the electronics of the amplifier may be defective. If not, the satellite speaker is likely broken.
There is no sound coming from either the speakers or the subwoofer
Please check that the operating lights of your Teufel device are on. If not, please change the fuse: it could be that the mains fuse on the subwoofer may have blown due to overvoltage in the mains. The fuse box is located underneath the plug. Use a small screwdriver to lever it out, replace the two jammed fuses and insert the fuse holder back into the fuse box. Now the subwoofer should be ready for use again.
Basic function test.
You can check the function of the subwoofer and the satellites by only connecting the (stereo) signal from an external source that is guaranteed to be good quality, such as a music CD played on a (portable) CD player, using a RCA cable (and possibly a Y adapter) with the front input L/R on the subwoofer.

The other four inputs on the subwoofer do not need to be occupied (= RCA cable disconnected). With this connection plug arrangement of front In L/R, the Concept E Magnum Power Edition amplifier activates all satellites and the subwoofer through internal distribution. If the subwoofer and all five satellites now play correctly via a directly connected CD player, the Concept E Magnum Power Edition was not receiving the correct signal before. Either the cinch cable is defective (try exchanging it) or the output of your source appliance is not producing the correct signal.

If you continue to experience unwanted noise/individual malfunctions, there is possibly a defect in the Teufel system.
How do I connect the five satellites to the Motiv 5?
The five satellites are connected directly to the speaker clamps on the subwoofer, using a normal speaker cable. We recommend using the speaker cable from the MO 500 W accessories package. Separate the ends of the speaker cable and remove the insulation.

Speakers and amplifiers have corresponding [+] and [−] clamps. The [+] cable of the speaker cable is marked with a stripe. It is important that the polarity of the speakers is identical when they are connected: the positive pole of the speaker connects to the positive pole of the amplifier and the negative pole of the speaker to the negative pole of the amplifier. Connecting the cables with the incorrect phases can result in thin sound, weak bass and reduced stereo characteristics. For multichannel surround systems, it is also important that all speakers are connected with the correct polarity in order to ensure the right three-dimensional atmosphere and the correct alignment of the sound.
How do I connect my fully active Teufel system to a notebook?
You can use our fully active sets to create perfect PC sound, not only on a desktop computer but also with a notebook.

If your notebook only has a single 3.5 mm stereo jack output, connect it using a 3.5 mm mini jack cinch Y adapter cable to the front input "In R/L" on the subwoofer.
Thanks to the integrated "Upmix" switch in the Concept E 2/ E Magnum / Motiv 5 / Concept F, the 4 satellite speakers play back a stereo signal and the centre speaker and the subwoofer each play back a mono signal. This admittedly does not sound as perfect as Dolby Digital, but does sound better than pure stereo playback.

You will still have the chance later on to operate your speaker using a convertible external 5.1-capable sound card, in order to experience the full pleasure of Dolby Digital and DTS.

Different companies, such as Creative, Terratec, Toshiba, ESI/Audiotrak and M-Audio, offer solutions for connection to the PCMCIA port or via USB or FireWire.
What is a ground hum?
The hum (50 Hz) comes from the 220 volt supply network and is caused by current power flows through the protective conductor. These so-called "ground hums" is caused when you connect two devices that are already grounded on the protective conductor (subwoofer) or the antennae cable (AV Receiver) to the subwoofer cable.

Solution:
Separate the direct connection by a grounding filter for the antennae cable that is created for it - for instance, the Teufel modell sheath current filter AC 9022 ED. Alternatively, you can use a galvanic separation filter that is looped into the connection between the subwoofer and AV Receiver.

The hum disappears if the antennae cable is separated from the Receiver/Tuner/TV. First try the grounding filter, otherwise the galvanic separation filter.
Where is the optimal place for the subwoofer of my Lautsprecher Teufel Surround System in a 5.1/6.1/7.1 configuration?
The location of a subwoofer with a recommended cut-off frequency of under/equal to 120 Hz can be freely selected and does not affect the other speakers.

Placement within the straight line between both front satellites is ideal - but not precisely in the corner of the room because certain frequency components could be unpleasantly excessive when played back.
How do I determine the right phase setting of the subwoofer?
By setting the phase, you can affect the point at which the membrane of the subwoofer bass speaker moves to the front. This setting makes it possible to optimally adjust the subwoofer to the satellites.

The membranes of the satellites should move to the front at the same time as the membrane of the subwoofer bass speaker, because all speakers of the system must vibrate in phase for optimal playback. This means that (provided the connection has the correct polarity) all drivers must move in one direction when the three front speakers receive a pulse (towards the outside or towards the inside).

If the subwoofer is in line with the front speakers, its bass speaker should have the same direction of movement (phase) - the controller on the woofer is set to "0". If the subwoofer is not between the front speakers, but is to the side of or even behind the listening location, its phase length will not match that of the front speakers. That is why the phase of the subwoofer must be changed in such cases.

So much for the theory. In practice, this means: Listen to a loud piece of music with heavy basses and ask a second person to change the phase during playback. The correct setting of the phase switch depends on where the subwoofer is positioned in the room. The position where the bass playback (above all the upper bass range) sounds the fullest is the correct position. Have fun trying it out!
What's the deal with the so-called bass traps or bass absorbers?
These are usually cubic wood housings (same MDF material as the speakers) with a bass reflex opening that have no membranes and are tuned to a certain frequency (e.g. 40 Hz as for a subwoofer). The frequency to be co-ordinated can be changed by the length and diametre of the bass reflex channel. If, for example, a room has a room resonance frequency of 28.3 Hz and this frequency is also played back in addition by a speaker/subwoofer, the room will begin to resonate at this frequency. This particular frequency is played back amplified.

This can be imagined as droning or booming, which occurs during heavy bass movie scenes such as explosions or certain types of music (Jazz, pizzicato bass). The bass absorber is then tuned exactly to this frequency so that only the speakers/subwoofer play back this frequency. The resonance frequency from the room, which would amplify this frequency, is swallowed by the bass absorber.

If you would like to damp more than one frequency (a room usually has three different frequencies: ceilings and floors, front and back and left and right, and its multiple), you will have to set up three absorbers accordingly.
How is the wattage of a subwoofer with respect to the sine wave and pulse/music performance?
Mono subwoofer:

The wattage (e.g. "360 W") printed on the rear of the subwoofer near the mains plug designates the ability of the power amplifier "to pull" a maximum power rating in the specified range at the moment of switching on (those 360 watt stated as an example).

Consequently, the wattage must correspond to at least the sine wave output of the amplifier, as this sine wave output must be permanently available which the power pack must provide as well.

The pulse/music performance of the amplifier, on the other hand, can exceed the wattage, because the short pulses are buffered additionally by the capacitors in the power pack and are not achieved solely through the performance of the power pack.

Multi-channel subwoofer:

The wattage for a multi-channel subwoofer can also be below the sine wave output, as the specified sine wave output is not requested from every channel at the same time.

For a 5 x 100 watt sinus power amplifier, for example, each of the five channels is able to implement 100 watt sine. However, not all five channels at the same time! This is also unnecessary, as the same signal is never transmitted across all five channels at the same time, thus requesting the same high sine wave output per channel.

That is why the wattage may be, e.g. 300 watt, even if the sine wave output exhibits 5 x 100 watt (= 500 watt).
Which subwoofer cables does Teufel recommend?

What is room resonance frequency?
Room resonance frequency (other terms: room modes, standing waves, resonance frequency) is the frequency at which the vibrations of a voice, a musical instrument or a signal played back over the hi-fi/home cinema system is amplified unnaturally, because the vibrations build up between the walls as well as the floor and ceiling.

It is calculated of the sound velocity divided by 2 and divided by the room length [ 340 m/s: 2 : 6 m = 28.3 Hz (=1/s) ] or, more simply: 170 divided by the room dimension (length, width or height). The greatest distance between two parallel walls is taken as first standard value. For a room of 4 x 6 metres, this would be 6 metres. Strictly speaking, you would have to calculate the room resonance frequency for further parallel walls (for the 4 metres and for the ceiling height).

Overlaying resonances are also possible if the room dimensions are very close to each other. (2.8 metres high, 3 metres wide and 5.6 metres long). The resonance at 2.8 metres is repeated as multiple (times 2) at 5.6 metres length, the resonance of the 3 metres width is close to the resonance of 2.8 metres. It would resonate strongly here at 30 Hz, 56 Hz, 60 Hz and 120/112 Hz.

Phenomena of resonance frequencies:

• For example, a man with a deep voice speaks in a very small room (2 by 2 metres, 85 Hz). The voice appears to have more emphasis than in another room or out of doors. As soon as a woman speaks, the voice will sound just the same as in another room.

• The voice of a woman or that of a small child will cause glass to shatter. The voice strikes exactly the tone that corresponds to the resonant frequency of the glass. The glass resonates so strongly that it shatters (refer to the movie "The Tin Drum").

• A group of soldiers march across a bridge in cadence. The equal movement causes the bridge to vibrate so much that it collapses. That is why no one marches across bridges in cadence.
