5.1 sound system

There’s no doubt about it – the Concept S is one of the most attractive and elegant speaker systems available. It’s the perfect optic and acoustic addition to a modern flat screen. Taking up a floor area of just 22 x 22 cm, the slimline, 9 cm wide and 1.13 metre high, aluminium columns can be integrated perfectly into almost every living room. The acoustically identical centre speaker, on the other hand, is in landscape format so that it can easily fit on, over or under the screen.

Two subwoofers are available for the position of the central bass output: the single-channel model for AV receiver operation or the integrated six-channel model with surround receiver.

The Subwoofer SW+R Dolby Digital/dts from the Concept S+R-Set has a full multichannel receiver with three analogue and two digital inputs, 350 watt output, remote control and UKW/MW radio. This means you can directly connect signal sources such as DVD players/recorders, TV, satellite receivers, MP3 players, games consoles and video recorders – and control them all via remote control from the comfort of your sofa. You don’t need a separate surround receiver.

Please note: like all Concept S components, this fully active 5.1 subwoofer SW+R Dolby Digital/dts is available separately, in case you still want to add your own choice of surround system without receiver.

The tried and tested Concept S mono active subwoofer is the best choice for connecting to any existing receivers/amplifiers. With 170 watt pure tone for the bass and the same 250 mm bass speaker as in the Subwoofer SW+R Dolby Digital/dts, it also provides a solid bass foundation even in rooms of up to 30m2. A remote control is included so that you can easily adjust the levels and the transfer frequency from the listening location.

When it comes to sound, you know you can rely on Teufel. Concept S offers a whole lot more than the similar-looking speaker systems from department stores that are usually cheaper imitation aluminium. The housings of the Concept S Satellites are actually made from solid aluminium – an extremely solid and robust material that is perfect for making speakers. All 26(!) chassis used in the Concept S are magnetically shielded so that all of the speakers can be set up without worrying about their proximity to TVs or monitors.

The attractive combination of elegant appearance and excellent sound has made the Concept S one of the bestselling home cinema sets that Teufel has ever produced. We haven’t rested on our laurels though, and we have kept on improving the product further – according to your wishes.

The Concept S is now available with a new centre speaker: The Concept S FCR supports the Teufel philosophy of using the same technical equipment for front and centre speakers, for optimum homogenous sound. That's because the same four mid-tone speakers and a particularly delicate high-tone dome now ensure clear and dynamic sound in the essential reproduction of speech. The new centre/satellite also exactly technically corresponds to the column speakers. The result is that you can use this speaker not just as a centre but also as a front or rear speaker. The integrated wall brackets allow both horizontal and vertical mounting.
That means that the Concept S can now be individually adapted to your specific spatial requirements, because you can combine columns and satellites however you like, without acoustic restrictions. If, for example, you can’t set up four columns, take just two columns and supplement them with three Concept S FCR satellites, using one as a centre and two as rear speakers.

What’s more, the “short” Concept S FCR can also be used as front speakers and then the "long" columns can be moved to the back. Or just use five centre/FCR satellites for attaching all the speakers to the wall. Everything just how you need it.
We have prepared six possible variations as ready-configured 5.1 systems where the set number always corresponds to the number of FCR satellites. In other words, set 1 contains an FCR satellite as a centre and four columns (so corresponds to the “classic” Concept S), set 3 comes with 3 x FCR satellites and two columns, set 5 consists only of five “short” FCR satellites for front, centre and rear sound reproduction. Naturally, they all include subwoofers!

The letter R indicates the fully active Subwoofer Concept S SW+R Dolby Digital/dts. These sets are called 1+R, 3+R and 5+R. That means you always have a set to match your specific requirements.

Subwoofer

"A classic offer!"
Audiovision 11/2005

Up to three kilohertz the satellites delivered almost totally linear frequencies. Beyond that there were some irregularities, but not that affected the sound. The sub delivers proper sound with 102 decibels and plays nice and deep with its 36 hertz.

It really delivered with lots of emphasis in "Saving Private Ryan" […] The satellites play together well and fill a room without breaking a sweat. The sound is great from the boxes. Distortion or stains in the sound are hardly ever produced by the Teufel set. […] It was up to the highest of volumes before the sound began to distort.

Conclusion
For the price you get absolutely great worksmanship, a full room sound and a remote control for the subwoofer.

"Great visuals, unbelievable sound – bull's eye!"
DVD Vision 11/2004

In the test room, the Concept S makes all the right moves. Many cheap complete systems make it possible to have such a player set. But for real listening fun, it's hard to find one as good as this – for true multichannel feeling you’ve simply got to reach deeper in your pocket.

With a hefty, assuming bass, highly pleasing deep ranges and shipshape output levels surprise. These columns impress with a surprisingly free and fresh playback. The centre with its compact size sounds quite exquisite. At higher volumes one can sometimes tell that that the volume is no substitution, but the playback sounds a little pressed.

The skills of the Teufel ensemble definitely work together so that at moderate-to-high output levels, film sounds as well as multichannel music sources play agreeably and without obvious problems.

Conclusion:
Teufel offers, for little money, a 5.1 complete system with the Concept S that has serious fun – rare in this price class.

Audio Video Foto Bild 10/2004

In the listening test the Teufel set delivered a really fantastic impression. The highs were almost too loud. Voices sounded a tad hollow and thin. The subwoofer plays remarkably well, and the walls shake with film explosions. Quiet film sound effects fall a little low. You can change the subwoofer's volume and cut-off frequency easily from the comfort of your sofa.

The Teufel subwoofer may not be small, but its sound is wickedly delightful. It effortlessly belts out the music, from dry drum solos to the deep growl of an electric bass.

In motion picture soundtracks, motors can be heard to purr powerfully. The balance was perfect and nothing sounded exaggerated. The subwoofer was easy to adjust using the included remote control.

Concept S "Set 1" review of Area DVD
"Diabolically good: A maximum in elegance and sound for little money."
Area DVD 08/2004

Competitors should consider the offers of the Berlin sound experts one time further to see what this company plans before doing anything – because no other can compare against the Concept S at this price. Whoever considers buying a good looking but only average sounding surround system for a small listening room and with short-sighted requirements will be disappointed with their purchase, as in light of the purchase price you‘ll hardly believe this news could get better: The Concept S delivers a lot of fun for the money.

The elegant, amazingly high quality worksmanship ensemble is "guilty as charged" because of the fresh, lovely sound work for the musical terrain is not off limits for free playing in the Teufel columns. The centre didn’t surprise any less than the columns did, as its really level resistant despite its small size and makes a natural, pleasing vocal playback possible. The active subwoofer plays and whoever knows Teufel products of this type would surely think that the Concept S plays excellently here: the bass establishes attention through its surprising power in film music playback and through a solid, never disruptive fundament in the multichannel music area which also makes a name for itself. All in all the Teufel Concept S is in a price class that has no currently competing 5.1 set. The absolute synthesis of sound and design willl certainly appeal to a wide audience.

"Unrivalled system with excellent sound."
Value Award Teschke 06/2007

"The company Teufel offers - with the fully active System S+Radio - a completely unrivalled system with excellent sound for this price category. The worksmanship is excellent and the visuals simply slender and gorgeous. The massive aluminium columns are real lookers and find a spot in every room thanks to their low setup space. The assembly of the satellites is child's play simple to set up as well. The subwoofer should be placed separately to help remote control operation. Ideal for (in our estimation) smaller businesses as hairdressing salons and boutiques or those needing radio reception all day long."

"This system offers a superb cinematic experience for this price category. High-end computer users will also get their money’s worth out of this system, granted of course that they use it together with a high-quality sound card such as the Crystalizer (Creative X-Fi) for best results. The price/performance ratio is very good."

"A highlight!"
Heimkino & HiFi Test 04+06/2004

Slim surround sound loudspeakers are as common as sand on a beach. Beautiful optics and technology with their extreme attention to detail spoils our audio visual soul and saves the budget. Teufel made a goal of this very thing and developed the surround system Concept S, a shining example of the best of this product class. The often promoted price / performance ratio of the Berlin manufacturers is a trendsetter here.

Equipment
All satellite components of the Concept S series come in excellent aluminium housings which leave an immediate yet lasting impression of quality. The considerable proportions of the slim columns look very commanding, yet unobtrusive. As a surround sound system they are optically arresting and are a real eye catcher in the sitting room. In the 113 centimeter-high aluminium towers there are four 70mm drivers which are responsible for the low and mid ranges from 100 Hz. In the high tone range, a dome tweeter handles the high tones, with a light diaphragm over it. With this the listener is ensured high sound conversion even at high levels.

In the centre loudspeaker, the drivers are arranged horizontally and allow easy positioning on a TV or a monitor. To ensure secure speaker contact, Teufel uses an exceptional loudspeaker terminal that comes with gold-plated terminals to really tempt the eye of the beholder.

In the deep bass sector the hefty bass driver works on the baffle of a LFE sound conversion. With its 250 millimetre diameter and the 300 watt performing amplifier, Teufel guarantees and delivers a powerful woofer performance. In the control panel of the active model Teufel bass plays all connectivity possibilities and can easily be integrated into a home cinema setup. For the real couch potatoes in the home film fan crowd there’s an extra highlight. In addition to the large display on the front of the subwoofer there’s an ergonomic subwoofer remote control, so you can change the level and banner frequencies from the comfort of your sofa. It’s so well equipped, this devilishly good home cinema experience has nothing more to add on top.

Labor
The Teufel sound columns deliver both the heavenly and the devilish sounds. Balanced midranges and smoothly harmonic high levels underline the knowledgeable development work out of Berlin. The Concept S subwoofer, thanks to its many different adjustment possibilities is perfect to bind satellite components together to shine with the best woofer capabilities. The Centre is set up excellently well by the angle measurements, because there‘s no serious aggregation effects in terms of the tweeter themselves on the 30 degree axis. With the dissolution measurement presents release times with short period vibrations still exemplary and are natural yet impulsive in playback quality.

Sound
We wanted to see what was inside the Concept S, so we loaded up a DVD. Ambra's "Child of the Universe" placed the crazy sound effects and wondering voices correctly in the room, and really allowed the subwoofer with its fulminating bass frequencies to shine. The performance power of the silver columns amazed with a solid groundtone that displayed a good dose of contours and midrange voices being accurately played back. Synthesiser sound and brute effects spectacles were always dependably delivered at the different levels without losing any details. The Teufel Centre‘s middle spoken voices came across with great understandability, and that not just straight in front of the speakers but also to the sides. It's particularly noticeable by "The Lord of the Rings". The speaker's voice monologue in the beginning sequence was authentically and consistently delivered and really drew out our goosebumps. In the subsonic bass area, the Concept subwoofer performs the proverbial powerful performance one would expect. Deep frequencies had flowing bass play and exploding water bombs from the DVD "U-571" were delivered with stable levels and bodily, and that experience was absolutely fantastic.

Conclusion
Teufel has proven once again that superior sound quality and tasteful design doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. A six-set that guarantees for a film experience of a totally different nature. The Teufel Concept S offers much for the money and is a gorgeous eye catcher. A gift from Teufel, that every home cinema fan should adopt. Teufel has won the title again for excellent sound quality and tasteful design without paying a fortune.

Help regarding this product
Can I order the Teufel speakers in different colours than those offered?
To realise the very reasonable sales prices usual for Teufel, it is not possible to offer the speakers in a multitude of housing designs.

This circumstance would drive up the production and storage costs, which would result in a significantly more expensive sales price.

A paint shop in your vicinity will surely be able to repaint the speaker housing to your preferred colour without loss of warranty - after expiry of the eight-week right of return.
Which cables do I need to connect a Teufel speaker set to the AV Receiver?
A home cinema system needs speaker cables to connect the satellite speakers to the receivers, and an NF mono RCA cable to connect the active subwoofer to the sub out socket of the AV Receiver.
My subwoofer is humming. What can I do?
This hum can be caused by the connected devices or disruptions in your electricity current. Please do a test to see which it is.

1. Remove the RCA cable from the input on the subwoofer. If the hum is no longer heard, go to point B. Otherwise, follow point A.

A. Attach the net cable of the subwoofer to another electricity outlet (i.e. Kitchen/Bathroom/Bedroom). If the subwoofer still hums, get in contact with our Support team.

Should the hum no longer be there, the disruption was a problem in your power supply, which can, for instance, be caused by dimmers or chargers. To find out where the disruption is, unplug all your devices and work back from there. As soon as the hum is heard, you now know your source of the disruption.

B. In your case, the "ground hum" is responsible for the disruption. Please proceed as follows to discover your source.

  • Disconnect the cable or satellite port from the TV Receiver and check if the hum disappears or not. If it does, you can use a sheath current filter for the cable outlet to prevent this. For example, the sheath current filter AC 9022 ED. If you have a satellite connection, connect the Satellite Receiver to the optical cable playback source - Teufel Optical Digital Cable

  • If this reason can be excluded, separate all devices from the AV Receiver one at a time until the hum stops. The last connected device is then your hum source and should be separated from the others using a galvanic separation filter (found in a retail shop)

  • If this doesn't work, get in contact with us once again so that we can give an individual, helpful response.
The satellites "hiss"
In principle the Concept F is a very low-noise system. In the high range area, very high-resolution quality speaker systems can 'expose' the defective quality of a signal source (e.g. from MP3 files or analogue cassette recordings) that is hardly noticeable on lower quality speakers.
You can check the basic noise level by connecting a signal, via a cinch cable, from an external source that is guaranteed to be good quality – such as a music CD e.g. on a portable CD player – to the Aux L/R input on the subwoofer. If all of the satellites are now playing noise-free, it is because they weren't receiving the right signal before. Either the cinch cable is defective (try swapping them around) or the output of your source appliance is not producing an adequate signal.

However, if you continue to hear increased noise on this channel there is possibly a fault in the Concept F. Please check which satellites are affected by changing the satellites around and to find out whether the satellite or the subwoofer electronics are producing excessive noise. If the fault "moves" with the satellite the satellite is the problem. On the other hand, if the hissing remains on the same channel, the subwoofer amplifier electronics are the cause.
Do I need the same cable length for all speakers?
In our experience, there is no acoustical difference for different cable lengths for lengths up to 15 metres.
The RAMPA insert at the bottom of the speaker sometimes is turned out with the tamping screw. What can I do about that?
Unscrew the tamping screw from the Rampa insert and screw the Rampa insert back into the bottom of the speaker.
