Setup tips for multimedia sound systems

The optimal setup for your multimedia loudspeakers

With a PC sound system, it makes sense to concentrate on radiating the sound onto the work area in front of the screen.

Setting up a 2.1 multimedia system

The front loudspeakers should be placed at equidistance to the screen on either side or mounted on the wall. Setting up the speakers at ear height is ideal, but a range that falls between 0.80 meters below ear height and 1.60 meters above will yield a good result. If you need to place the speakers outside of this ideal zone, simply angle them slightly towards the listening position.

The subwoofer can be positioned just about anywhere bass tones are not easily localized. It is ideal, however, to place the sub somewhere along a straight line between the front speakers if possible.

Setting up a 5.1 multimedia system

Since the centre speaker plays back diaolgue, this loudspeaker should be placed in a central position either under or above the monitor and, depending on its height relative to the listening position, angled towards the listener.

The front loudspeakers should be placed at equidistance to the left and right of the monitor or wall mounted.

Placement at ear height is ideal, but anywhere between 0.80 meters below and 1.60 meters above is a tolerable range. If you need to place the speakers outside of this range, simply angle them slightly towards the listening position. The front speakers can also be placed on stands.

The subwoofer can be placed anywhere as it will not influence the other loudspeakers. Positioning the subwoofer between the front satellites, however, is ideal. The rear speakers, also known as “surround speakers” should be placed directly opposite the front loudspeakers behind the listening position at a height of up to 2 meters. Less than ideal loudspeaker placement can often be compensated for by the settings in the control unit.

Setting up a 7.1 multimedia system

Since the centre speaker plays back diaolgue, this loudspeaker should be placed in a central position either under or above the monitor and, depending on its height relative to the listening position, angled towards the listener. This will create a unified audio/video experience.

The subwoofer can be placed anywhere as it will not influence the other loudspeakers, since the low bass range it produces cannot be easily localized. Positioning the subwoofer between the front satellites, however, is ideal.

The rear centre speakers should be placed behind the listening position, directly opposite the front centre, ideally at a height that does not exceed 2 meters. The rear speakers (also known as the surround speakers) should be placed to the left and right of the listening position, ideally at the same height as the front speakers. Their height should not exceed 2 meters but if this is necessary, you can angled the speakers slightly towards the listening position.

Less than ideal loudspeaker placement can often be compensated for with the settings in the control unit. Refer to the handbook that came with your soundcard to learn more about this feature.
