FAQ

You've always wanted to know what's behind the terms and designations of the audio world? Then take a look at our audio glossary. Here you will find a short and concise explanation of, for example, bi-amping, bi-wiring, impedance and ohms.

What are noise cancelling headphones?

Many are all too familiar with the exhausting drone of a bus or airplane engine or the distracting sound of outside construction. Thanks to Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology, there’s a way to escape unwanted sounds. Simply put on a comfortable pair of headphones, press a button and enter a personal oasis of quiet. Teufel’s noise cancelling headphones also produce crystal clear playback. Together with ANC, you’ll be able to enjoy your music or podcasts without having to crank up the volume to max and damaging your ears.

Many headphones offer a construction that effectively isolates some outside noise. To really block out unwanted sound, however, Active Noise Cancelling technology is required.

The difference between noise isolating and noise cancelling headphones

Noise isolating headphones

When reading headphone product descriptions, one should be careful not to confuse two qualities: Noise isolating and noise cancelling. Noise isolating headphones use passive elements such as a closed construction, padding and damping material to keep the playback from seeping out and background noise from reaching the ear. The best examples of headphones that employ passive noise isolation are closed over-ear headphones such as the Teufel Massive and in-ear headphones with a good, snug fit in the ear cancel such as the MOVE BT. The MOVE BT comes with a variety of different sized ear pieces for optimal noise isolation.

Noise cancelling headphones

Active Nose Cancelling headphones (also known as ANC headphones) use small microphones to detect outside sound. This background noise is then processed and converted into anti-sound waves. These are sound waves that are out-of-phase with the surrounding sound. When the two sound waves meet, they are effectively cancelled out. ANC technology is especially effective with deeper frequencies such as a droning motor or the hum or an air conditioner. This makes noise cancelling headphones perfect for travelling by bus, train or airplane.
ANC technology can be activated with or without playback so that you can enjoy your music without disruption, or simply envelope yourself in a peaceful oasis. Due to their active electronics, noise cancelling headphones require a battery. This battery can usually be recharged per USB cable.

Advantages of noise cancelling headphones from Teufel Audio

Teufel Audio naturally offers the latest noise cancelling technology with headphones. The MUTE BT offers effective noise isolating properties as well as Active Noise Cancelling technology. In addition, the MUTE BT comes equipped with Bluetooth for wireless listening enjoyment. The same model also comes without Bluetooth as the Teufel MUTE.
A 28-hour runtime makes these among the longest playing headphones in their price class. The battery can be removed from the ear cup for charging separately while a second battery is inserted.
