- Perect for smaller rooms or as the rear speaker in a Definion surround set
Patented SCA technology (synchronized coaxial acoustic) offers the best conditions for approaching the ideal of a point source. After 2.5 years of intense development, a quality of playback was achieved that sets new standards for precision in terms of dimensionality, fine dynamics, and precision. Individual instruments retain their natural sound, and even less experienced listeners will notice the difference between between the Definion and other loudspeakers. Muisc sounds vivid and fully present, like listening to a live concert.
The elegant design combines a slender form with high-end acoustic functionality. A sophisticated reinforced trapezoidal form reduces resonances to a minimum, and an innovative floating baffle prevents enclosure reflections from being transmitted to the listening position. The curvature forms a waveguide for the higher frequencies which have a tendency to concentrate in a vertical direction. A precise sound within a broad listening range is the result. Individual instruments can be pinpointed in the full and rich soundstage that is created and seem almost tangible.

The specially constructed bass driver is able to achieve a very low end in a relatively small, sealed enclsure thanks to a clever design.
The technical features of the bass drivers:
- Generously dimensional driver action with a 1½“ voice coil for the best bass control & load capacity
- Very large linear excursion: X-Max= +/- 8 mm for low distortion with high levels
- Vented voice coil carriers reduce distortion as well as compression effects
- Air-cooled pole piece with double convection channels reduce the risk of wind noises
- Highly stable voice coil carriers made from black fiberglass reduce the loss of mechanical energy for increased dynamics & more precise playback with finer nuances
- Strategically placed aluminium rings homogenize the magentic field and so lessen the dynamic compression effect
- A highly stable die-cast basket ensures highly precise membrane movement at high levels as well as unimpeded heat dissipation
- A light and rigid aluminium and paper fibre sandwich membrane construction effectively reduces partial oscillations
- Low loss suspension design prevents mechanical friction losses for a very low end
An additional technical highlight is a connection terminal that allows for bi-wiring and bi-amping. An optional stand positions the Definion 5S at the perfect height for listening from a typical seated position. The cable can be tucked away inside the stand.

Thanks to almost identical driver construction and tuning, the Definion 5S is an ideal rear speaker to combine with the Definion 5 for surround sound. Together with a Definion centre and optional subwoofer, the Definion 5S creates a very impressive surround system capable of rending music and movie sound that is detailed, balanced, and true-to-source.

Expert reviews

"Compared to the [...] active streaming loudspeakers Dynaudio XEO 4 that at 2,000 Euro [...] cost the same, [...] the Teufel speakers were effortlessly able to assert themselves. [...] Their inobstrusvie and good-natured response had very little to offer in opposition to the lively and impulsive playback of the Definion 5S.”
“Their own character and remains consistently neutral. [...] This is a quality that defines true audiophile loudspeakers and can otherwise only be found in isolated instances in this price class.“
"[T]hese loudspeakers [offer] above average value for the money. The promised made by the manufacturer regarding extremely precise playback are fully and completely fulfilled whereby the time and effort that went into the development of the coaxial drivers, which will certainly appear in future Teufel models, really paid off. Very few loudspeaker in this price class are able to manage such a good blend of pure enjoyment with music and serious audiophile playback.”

Sound
"With […] the Eureo dance classic “Up ‘n’ Away,” the Definion 5S revealed an excellent impulse fidelity and an enornmously deep bass capabilities. It churns out the bass without mercy, and not only with power, but it really makes a statement with an exact reproduction of all bass elements. The electronic effects as well as the vocals were smooth and evinced a first-class spaciality. With electronic music, one thing is certain: The Teufel construction makes a sparkling display of its abilitites. With outstanding and pronounced dynamic leaps and a power and the precision in the bass range that is simply astonishing, [...] they easily play most floor-standing speakers into the ground. [...T]he Berlin sound experts more than prove that it isn't enough for to be taken seriously as suppliers of stereo speakers: The setting of new standards [...] is clearly a priority.”
"The bass is sensational. With the bass, the Definion 5S reaches literally deep down and proves itselfs to be extremely agile [...]. The Definion 5S plays with authentic 3 dimensionality. The spaciality on offer never seems artificial or exaggerated. The sound consistently and skillfully separates itself from the loudspeakers and distributes itself throughout the listening room. [...] A highly accurate separation of voices and instruments can be constantly discerned. The depth and expanse of the virtual stage is excellent.”
"The fine dynamics is [...] exceptionally well executed, even in the acoustic background, the Definion 5S brings out a multitutde of details into the acoustic light of day.”
Conclusion
"[...T]he Definion top models have retained their excellent price/performance ratio as a Teufel characteristic. [...] One can only say that it is more than fair, because the bar for this price class has been raised without compromise. Strong bass, harmonious, broad and fine dynamics – all are first class. For Theater 2 and larger systems, we recommend the Teufel cable with 4 mm² cross-section for the front/centre speakers, and the 2.5 mm² cable up to a length of 15 metres for the effect speakers.
Choose a higher cross-section for even greater lengths.
This circumstance would drive up the production and storage costs, which would result in a significantly more expensive sales price.
A paint shop in your vicinity will surely be able to repaint the speaker housing to your preferred colour without loss of warranty - after expiry of the eight-week right of return.
Fully active set do not necessarily need an AV Receiver. The five to seven satellite speakers here are supplied with power by the amplifiers which are installed in the subwoofer in addition to the subwoofer power amplifier. This saves you the costs of a receiver, but it is usually only possible to connect one source to our fully active subwoofer.
Exceptions here are the Concept E2, the Concept E Magnum Digital, the Motiv 5 Digital, the Concept F, the LT2+R and the Concept S+R.
Naturally you can also equip the fully active systems with an AV Receiver at a later point. The connection is then equal to the partially active sets.
Modern AV Receivers offer numerous options for compensating electronically for any compromises in the set up. Generally speaking, the following rule always applies: you can always use our recommendations as a basis for experimenting with what works best for you, acoustically and optically. Let your ears (and eyes) decide!
Bi-wiring states that the corresponding speaker can be controlled at the same time with two different speaker cables, meaning via separated input sockets for the treble and mid-tone range on one hand, and for the bass range of the frequency switch on the other. This could improve the sound even more. Bi-wiring is the prerequisite for bi-amping.
